The Sale of the Building Where Eike Batista Worked Is Being Sold for Administrative Purposes of the State of Rio de Janeiro
The former residence of businessman Eike Batista, in the Francisco Serrador building, in Cinelândia, located in downtown Rio de Janeiro, which has long been seeking new residents, may have a new destination in the coming months. This is because the City Council of Rio de Janeiro has initiated an option to purchase and is expected to acquire it.
The documentation of the former businessman’s “kingdom” is already, in fact, in the hands of the Municipal Court of Accounts (TCM), and the City Council has a two-month preferential purchasing option granted by the TCM. The estimated cost of the 23-story property, which has approximately 25 thousand square meters, is R$150 million, to be paid with public funds.
The goal is to consolidate all offices, committees, and administrative sectors that are currently spread across five other buildings, three of which are rented in Praça Floriano and Avenida Treze de Maio. Altogether, they cost R$ 6 million per year.

Problems in the Building of Eike Batista
However, even with the sale of the building, it is not free of problems, considering that at the Pedro Ernesto Palace, Rio de Janeiro, the Council enumerates several defects in the electrical and hydraulic installations, deteriorated facades at risk of collapse, and has also stated that it will be necessary to invest R$ 33 million in the restoration of the properties.
Moreover, the City Council also mentions that there is currently no space, for example, for the 26 committees of the house. Next year, the Pedro Ernesto Palace will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and the councilors’ idea is to return it to the city on this symbolic date, transforming the space into a cultural center and ceding the adjacent building to the city hall, which could transform it into residential housing.
However, all this “dream” will depend on much negotiation, and already this Wednesday (30), the plenary of the Municipal Court of Accounts is expected to meet to discuss the proposal. Three councilors have already indicated they will vote in favor of not blocking the acquisition of the property.
Future Proceedings
In the first week of December, the leaders’ college in the Council is expected to meet to detail the conditions of the proposal to sell the building of Eike Batista in Rio de Janeiro.
The City Council of Rio stated in a note that the purchase of Eike’s former home will be made with funds saved by the current management of the house, which will also allocate over R$ 70 million to the health sector of Rio de Janeiro this year.
According to the Council, the current building that belonged to Eike Batista will be donated to the city hall for the construction of popular housing, and the Pedro Ernesto Palace will be transformed into a cultural center open to the public.
