Starlink, Elon Musk’s Satellite Network, Now Offers Free Internet in Areas Without Carrier Signal. The Service Is Automatically Activated When the Phone Loses Traditional Connection. The Feature Is Already Operational in Several Countries and Should Help Those Who Live or Work in Remote Areas.
Anyone who has struggled in areas without cell signal knows how bad it is to be unreachable. Now, that may be coming to an end. Starlink, Elon Musk’s company, has begun offering free satellite internet for those in areas without carrier coverage. The news was announced by Estadão’s E-Investidor platform.
The service is still limited, but it allows for sending messages and using real-time location. This can be useful in emergencies or even when traveling through remote regions. The name of the signal that appears on the phone in these cases is “T-Mobile SpaceX.”
How Does Starlink’s Free Internet Work?
The proposal from Starlink is simple: if your phone has no signal and the location has access to an open sky, the device can automatically connect to the company’s satellite network. No new SIM card is required, nor do you need to pay for an extra plan. The signal is emergency, but it can be a lifesaver in critical situations.

For now, the connection allows:
- Sending and receiving text messages;
- Sharing your location with contacts;
- Calling emergency services, such as police or rescue.
Starlink has already announced that in the future it will also enable voice calls and full internet access for those using the satellite connection.
Which Phones Work With This Internet?
Not every device can connect to the Starlink network. According to the Estadão article, the compatible models are:
- iPhones 14 or newer
- Google Pixel 9
- Samsung Galaxy A14
The phone’s system needs to be up-to-date and the emergency mobile networks feature must be enabled in the settings.
Do You Have to Pay for Anything?
Access is completely free, as explained on Starlink’s website and confirmed by E-Investidor’s report. But it’s worth noting: the internet only works in areas without conventional carrier signals. In other words, you can’t use this connection all the time, only when you are truly isolated.
