Judicial Documents Reveal Elon Musk Sought Mark Zuckerberg’s Support In A Billion-Dollar Bid To Buy OpenAI In Early 2025.
In August 2023, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg exchanged public jibes and even considered a “cage fight.” Two years later, the billionaires could have taken a very different path.
Judicial documents revealed that Musk sought support from Mark Zuckerberg for a bid to purchase OpenAI.
According to information released by CNBC, Elon Musk approached the CEO of Meta in early 2025 for a public bid valued at US$ 97.4 billion.

The initiative was part of the efforts of the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, along with his company xAI, to form a consortium of investors capable of financing the acquisition.
Offer Rejected And Altman’s Criticism
In February, Musk surprised the market by presenting a bid to purchase OpenAI.
However, Sam Altman, the company’s CEO, rejected the offer. When questioned during the Paris AI Action Summit, Altman told Bloomberg: “Elon tries all sorts of things. I think he’s probably just trying to delay us.”
The episode reinforced the tension between the two. Musk co-founded OpenAI, but left the company in 2018 after internal disagreements.
Since then, he has accused Altman and the current management of straying from the original nonprofit proposal, prioritizing Microsoft’s profits, which invested billions in the company.
Ongoing Legal Battle
The dispute reached the courts. Musk filed a lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI last year.
The company responded with a counterclaim, which was authorized to proceed by a judge.
Additionally, xAI filed a 107-page complaint against OpenAI in November 2024.
The accusation stated that the creator of ChatGPT was spending US$ 1.5 billion to maintain 1,500 employees and was offering exorbitant salaries to attract talent.
Zuckerberg In The Line Of Fire
The documentation also mentioned Meta. According to the records, Zuckerberg’s company was reportedly spending heavily on artificial intelligence research and attempting to hire researchers from OpenAI, offering payment packages of US$ 100 million or more.
Meanwhile, Musk and Zuckerberg continue to rank among the world’s wealthiest. Bloomberg’s index lists Musk at US$ 364 billion and Zuckerberg at US$ 260 billion.
Perhaps the next fight will not be in a cage, but in the courts — or in a billion-dollar battle for artificial intelligence.
