Enel and Tim Bet on Building New Solar Power Plants in Bahia
On Wednesday (24), Tim and Enel X announced a partnership to begin constructing two more solar power plants in Brazil. Ongoing since April of last year, the project by Tim and Enel plans for a solar power plant in the city of América Dourada and another in Ibitirá, both located in Bahia. Together, Tim and Enel will add over 24,000 solar panels with a capacity of 9.919 Mega-Watt peak (MWp), enough to supply power to Tim’s 716 sites in the state.

The plants are expected to start operating in the second half of this year and are projected to reduce emissions by 13,000 tons of CO2 annually. With innovations, Enel X aims to reach 27.1 MWp in solar energy focused on the industrial sector through photovoltaic cells, a device that uses spontaneous chemical reactions to convert it into electrical energy.
According to the business model finalized, the contract for the plants with Tim will be valid for 15 years. The project for the plants, which aims to reduce carbon and distribute clean energy, has been in the company’s plans since 2017. The company already has 34 solar, hydropower, and biogas plants, and closed 2020 with 24.5% of its energy consumption generated from renewable sources.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.

Solar Energy in Tim’s Plans for 2022
Tim expects to reach the mark of 60 solar power units with a monthly generation of 38GWh in 2022. This energy is enough to supply a city with 150,000 inhabitants. Looking further ahead, in 2025, the company aims to reach 90% clean energy.
Bruno Gentil, Business Support Director at Tim, emphasizes the importance of the topic within an agenda aligned with the pillars of the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance principles.
The Director adds: “Renewable sources are important not only for promoting cost reduction but – primarily – to meet the growing demand from society for clean energy, ensuring environmental preservation and the quality of life for the population. We rely on partners like Enel X, who prioritize solutions for the future, in the projects and investments we undertake across the country, in search of energy efficiency.”
