Solar Energy in 2025: Find Out Why It Still Makes Sense to Install Solar Panels Even with Sun Taxation and Tax Increases in the Sector.

In recent years, those following the renewable sector in Brazil have only heard about challenges for solar energy in 2025. The so-called sun taxation, the increase in import tariffs for photovoltaic modules, and the new rules for using the power grid have caused quite a stir and left many people in doubt. But did all this actually make the investment in solar panels lose its meaning? The answer, as you’ll see now, might surprise you — a lot.

How Did Sun Taxation and Taxes Affect the Market?

It all started in early 2023 when the so-called sun taxation came into effect. This change forced those who installed solar systems from that date forward to pay the TUS of wire B, which is like a toll for using the distributors’ grid.

This scared quite a few people at the time because until then, solar energy was seen as a way to escape the tariffs of the utilities. Additionally, in 2024 there came another blow: the increase in the import tax on photovoltaic modules, which jumped from 9.6% to 25%.

With this scenario, the forecast was that costs would soar and the dream of having a personal system would become more distant. But what happened was the opposite: the prices of systems dropped. That’s right. Recent data from Greener, a reference in the sector, shows that between January 2023 and January 2025, the average price of residential systems of up to 75 kW fell by over 36%.

For larger systems, over 150 kW, the drop was nearly 38.5%. Even with the tax increase at the end of 2024, the first quarter of 2025 still recorded price reductions, thanks to the overall decrease in equipment costs.

Is It Worth Installing Solar Energy in 2025?

With so much news about rising costs and taxes, it’s understandable that some people are hesitant. But the numbers show that the current scenario is one of the most favorable for consumers. This is because the payback, which is the time needed to recover the amount invested in installation, is getting shorter.

In January 2025, residential systems of 4 kW had an average payback of 3.2 years — a reduction of over 10% compared to the previous year. In states where the scenario was more complicated, the time dropped from 4.8 to 4.4 years. In states with better conditions, the return decreased from 2.8 to 2.6 years.

For companies, the return is even faster. Commercial systems of 50 kW peak already have a payback of about 1.9 years. In other words, even with sun taxation and tax increases, the technology is more accessible and the return on investment is quicker.

Why Are Solar Panels Still Advantageous?

The big game-changer was the drop in the price of photovoltaic modules in the international market. Since they represent a significant part of the cost of a solar system, this reduction offset the higher taxes and helped keep prices in Brazil down. Additionally, competition among installation companies and distributors also pressured prices downward, benefiting the end consumer.

Another important point is the predictability of the electricity bill cost. Those who install solar panels gain more control over energy expenses, protecting themselves from the constant increases in utility tariffs. At a time when inflation and the cost of living are concerning, this carries significant weight in the decision.

What to Expect for the Coming Years?

Even with the end of import exemptions and the changes in regulations, the Brazilian solar energy market remains strong. Technologies continue to evolve, equipment is becoming more efficient, and demand shows no signs of decline. For those considering installation, the best course is to research reliable suppliers, understand the type of system that best fits consumption, and plan the investment carefully.

The renewable energy sector in Brazil continues to be one of the biggest bets for the future, and solar energy, even with its new challenges, remains a key player. So, yes: in 2025, it is worth installing solar energy. The investment remains secure, the return is getting faster, and opportunities are still substantial.
