The Largest Floating Solar Plant in the WORLD Could Be the Solution for a More Sustainable Future with Its Capacity to Supply 700 Thousand Families Per Day!

The Floating Solar Power Plant in South Fuyang, considered the largest single floating solar power plant in the WORLD in China, started operating on December 27, 2023, reaching its maximum capacity for connection to the solar power generation grid at that time. Located in Fuyang, Anhui province of China, the floating plant is the largest floating solar power plant in the WORLD, with over 1 million photovoltaic modules, which is equivalent to 1,300 football fields. The site where the floating plant is installed is also the largest well-utilized idle area in a coal mining region.

The largest floating solar plant in the world was built in a water area formed by about 13 thousand acres of coal mining subsidence. Its total installed capacity is 650 thousand kilowatts, with 122 huge photovoltaic arrays capable of providing an average annual energy generation of around 700 million kilowatt-hours.

Economically, the solar power plant can save approximately 220 thousand tons of coal annually, not to mention a reduction in carbon dioxide, the feared CO², by 580 thousand tons.

According to Hu Lechao, project manager of the East China Energy Construction Administration: “By using idle water areas in coal mining subsidence to build floating solar power plants, we can save land resources while taking advantage of the good heat dissipation characteristics of water to effectively improve power generation efficiency. The daily amount of electricity generated can meet the electricity consumption demand for a day for a population of 700,000 people.”

Effectiveness of the Largest Floating Solar Plant in the WORLD

According to reports, the largest floating solar plant in the WORLD is also capable of effectively and safely covering the water surface, minimizing evaporation while preventing the growth and proliferation of marine algae in its surroundings.

Floating Solar Plants in Brazil

Currently, Brazil has 4 floating solar plants, one in Presidente Figueiredo, Amazonas, one in the Billings Reservoir in the state of São Paulo (its construction is still underway), one on the lake of the Rosana hydroelectric power plant in São Paulo inland, and finally, one in Sobradinho, Bahia.

Soon, construction of the floating solar plant in the Billings Reservoir will be completed. The plant is considered the largest floating solar plant in Brazil, a giant step towards sustainability. The solar energy plant established in São Paulo has a very promising future and could serve as an example for other states and even countries.

Named Floating Photovoltaic Plant (UFF Araucária), this is an ambitious project in the São Paulo energy sector. Located in the Billings Reservoir, with an initial investment of R$30 million, UFF Araucária has about 10,500 solar panels installed over the water, and this super project is capable of generating up to 10 GWh annually.

Completion of the UFF Araucária Project, the Largest Floating Solar Plant in Brazil

The UFF Araucária plant project in São Paulo is expected to be completed by 2025, possibly entering operation once the operating license granted by the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo, Cetesb, is issued. Expectations for the Brazilian floating solar energy plant to begin operations are extremely high, as investors have great faith in its potential.

Speaking of potential, Brazil has a huge potential for renewable energy generation, as the Brazilian territory is vast and has strategic locations in its favor. Furthermore, the partnership between solar panels and hydroelectric power plants reveals advantageous solutions that can address energy supply problems, commonly caused by droughts and sudden drops in reservoirs.

Indeed, projects like the Floating Solar Power Plant in South Fuyang and the Floating Photovoltaic Plant UFF Araucária in São Paulo only serve to reinforce the potential of solar energy and also consolidate other types of renewable energy sources as the best options for a more sustainable future and a restored environment, not to mention the contribution to the economy of each country that chooses to invest in these types of potential projects.
