Graphene Foam Demonstrated Today With Presence of Authorities, Including Minister Marcos Pontes. Learn More

The graphene foam was presented at the Rio Innovation Week, a technology and innovation event taking place in Rio de Janeiro.

This year, the event features an interesting participation from public universities and other research centers in the country, which are showcased at the Science Village, organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Today’s demonstration included the presence of the Minister, astronaut Marcos Pontes, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, authorities and professors, as well as those responsible for the new technologies being demonstrated. The graphene foam was developed in the graduate program in Process Engineering and Technologies at the University of Caxias do Sul, with the goal of developing hydrophobic foams.

There is still no deadline for the technology to be available for real disaster assistance, as both the university and Zextec still have tests to conduct before the product is released on a commercial scale.

Like in other cases, this research received both State and Federal support, through CNPQ and the Research Fund of Rio Grande do Sul, and is another example of the incredible results that Brazilian science can offer with sufficient funding.

What is the Rio Innovation Week?

The Rio Innovation Week is an event specially developed to discuss technology and innovation, as well as to generate business. It is one of the largest events of its kind in the world, being the largest in Latin America.

Diverse markets are represented and have interesting projects to showcase.

The project for the barge and the graphene foam for ocean and river cleanup, as well as the possibility of action in water treatment stations, is just one of the hundreds of projects you can learn about there.

The event will take place until tomorrow at the Jockey Club, and you can find more information about tickets and more on the official website of the event.

The Growing Importance of This Mineral for Future Technology.

Tweet from the State Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation about the event

The graphene foam is just one of the many uses that this very important mineral has received in recent years.

This week, we already talked about the use of graphene to enable sodium batteries to have a charge similar to that of lithium batteries, but much more can still be discovered and developed with this material.

Just like carbon credits for the preservation of the Amazon, the use of ethanol for electric cars through hydrogen conversion, and many other incredible technologies, graphene is also an interesting possibility for Brazil to take on a leading role not only as a supplier of raw materials but also as a hub for the development of green technologies with high ecological, social, and economic impact.
