The initiative, which is part of an effort to modernize the railway transportation in the state, includes the concession of the Line 7-Rubi of CPTM, signed in May 2024.
This investment, in addition to improving the efficiency of the transport system, aims to consolidate São Paulo as a national benchmark in railway mobility.
The project will bring a major transformation to the public transportation landscape in the region, connecting various metro and CPTM lines, and will eventually integrate intercity trains.
Integration and Connection with the Capital City
One of the biggest challenges and objectives of this project is the efficient integration of different transport lines, facilitating the mobility of the population.
The Água Branca Station, with the planned expansion, will be a strategic point for connection between various means of public transportation, including metro, CPTM, and intercity trains.
The proposal includes the construction of new platforms that will accommodate not only the trains of the Intercity Train (TIC), but also the future TIC West Axis, which will connect São Paulo to Sorocaba.
The Água Branca Station, with this expansion, will become a large transport hub, connecting passengers to the Line 7-Rubi, Line 8-Diamante, Line 9-Esmeralda of CPTM, Line 3-Vermelha, and Line 6-Laranja of the Metro.
These new features will significantly increase the transport capacity and provide more options for those who depend on the public mobility system in the region.
Transformation in Mobility: The Impact of the Intercity Train (TIC)
The project also includes the Intercity Train (TIC) North Axis, which will improve mobility between São Paulo and Campinas.
With a length of 101 km, the service will allow express travel between the two cities, with an estimated travel time of 64 minutes, including stops in cities like Jundiaí.
This service will not only expedite travel between these two major metropolitan areas but will also stimulate economic growth in the region.
The project also includes the Intermetropolitan Train (TIM), which will be an important line for intermunicipal transport, connecting Jundiaí to Campinas in 33 minutes.
The initiative aims to reduce traffic on the roads and provide quick and comfortable transport alternatives for passengers.
With the arrival of intercity trains, the integration between neighboring cities and the capital will become more efficient, promoting a higher passenger flow and facilitating access to various services and commercial activities.
The Phases of the Expansion of the Água Branca Station
Due to the complexity of the construction, the expansion of the Água Branca Station will be carried out in three phases, with completion forecasts over the coming years.
The first phase is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026 and will include the integration of Line 6-Laranja with Line 7-Rubi, in addition to improving connections with other lines of CPTM and the metro.
The second phase, which will primarily feature the integration of Lines 8-Diamante and 9-Esmeralda, will also see the arrival of the TIC Campinas, facilitating transport between São Paulo and Campinas.
Finally, the third and last phase of the project aims to prepare for the future connection of the Line 3-Vermelha of the Metro with the Água Branca Station, as well as integration with the TIC Sorocaba, a project that will further expand the options for railway transportation in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.
The Impact on the Future of Railway Transportation in São Paulo
With the completion of these works, the Água Branca Station will establish itself as one of the largest and most important mobility points in the State of São Paulo, with the capacity to serve millions of passengers daily.
This project reflects the growing investment in infrastructure and innovation in the public transport system, and is also an essential part of the efforts to make the city more connected and accessible.
In addition to facilitating access to different points in the city and the metropolitan region, the project will bring benefits in terms of reducing travel time, increasing efficiency, and improving the quality of public transportation.
The integration of different train, metro, and intercity lines will promote a more agile and sustainable mobility, with fewer traffic jams and more options for commuting for the population of São Paulo.
The Future of Urban Mobility: What to Expect from the New Interconnections?
The expansion of the Água Branca Station is just one part of the larger plan to modernize public transport in São Paulo.
With the arrival of new trains and the integration between different lines, the city will have the opportunity to offer its residents a more efficient, fast, and sustainable transport system.
These investments will not only benefit the population in terms of mobility but will also have a positive impact on the economy by facilitating the movement of workers, students, and tourists.
The integration between train lines, metro, and intercity trains is an important step towards creating a smarter and more accessible public transport system, that meets the needs of a city that is constantly growing and seeking more efficient mobility alternatives.
