First Monument to Stalin in “New Russia” Inaugurated by Pro-Kremlin Communists in Occupied City of Ukraine, Marking 80 Years of Soviet Victory Against Nazism
A bust of Joseph Stalin was inaugurated in the city of Melitopol, in the Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian territory currently controlled by Russia. The ceremony took place on Friday (9), marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Union.
The Communist Party, aligned with the Kremlin, was responsible for the event. According to the group, this is the “first” monument dedicated to Stalin in “New Russia,” a name used by Moscow to designate the occupied Ukrainian areas claimed as part of its territory since the start of the military offensive three years ago.
Local residents reported on the installation of the statue. Photos show the bronze bust of the Soviet dictator, with his characteristic mustache and a closed military jacket.
