WHO warns of impacts of extreme heatwave affecting European countries since June 21

Europe is facing a strong heatwave, which has already caused more than 1,300 additional deaths since June 21, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, millions of people are dealing with extreme temperatures in different regions of the continent.

According to the WHO, the climatic phenomenon advanced during the last week. Initially, the heatwave hit countries in Western Europe and later began to reach areas in the East.

According to WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, about 150 million people are living under extreme heat during this period.

Furthermore, the organization’s representative stated that schools were closed and that electric grids experienced pressure due to increased demand caused by the high temperatures.

Extreme heat in Europe raises concern over deaths and impacts on public health

According to the World Health Organization, intense heat is often called the “silent killer” because its effects can primarily affect the most vulnerable groups.

Additionally, Tedros stated that many homes, workplaces, and schools in Europe were not prepared to withstand prolonged periods of extreme temperatures.

On the other hand, health authorities are monitoring the impacts in different countries. In France, for example, approximately 1,000 deaths above the expected since June 24 have been recorded.

According to the French national public health agency, the increase mainly affected people over 65 years old.

Moreover, the country recorded a 40% increase in deaths occurring within homes during the period of intense heat.

France, Germany, and European countries set new temperature records

Meanwhile, authorities continue to monitor the evolution of the heatwave.

The head of the emergency department at Pompidou Hospital in Paris, Philippe Juvin, stated that the number of victims could reach a “very, very serious” level.

Additionally, projections indicate that at least 191 million people in Europe are expected to face temperatures equal to or exceeding 35°C this Sunday.

According to data from the Agence France-Presse (AFP), the most affected regions include Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland.

In the Czech Republic, a new record was set on June 28. The city of Doksany, located north of Prague, reached 41.1°C.

Previously, the location had recorded 40.6°C on Saturday, according to information from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI).

Additionally, Germany also reached a new historical mark. According to provisional data from the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the country reached 41.7°C.

The previous day, Germany had already recorded 41.5°C in Drewitz, in the east of the territory.

Heatwave in Europe remains an international health alert

Therefore, the heatwave that began on June 21 continues to be monitored by health organizations and meteorological institutions.

Additionally, the numbers released by the WHO, French authorities, and climate monitoring centers indicate significant impacts in different European countries.

Thus, while temperatures remain high, governments and public bodies continue to monitor the situation to reduce the risks caused by extreme heat.
