Brazil’s agribusiness exports in March were not affected by the consequences of the new coronavirus, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Evidence of this was the US$ 9.29 billion collected from external sales, a 13.3% increase compared to March 2019 (US$ 8.20 billion).

The reason for the significant number was the increase in the quantity exported (18.8%). However, the price index of exported products fell by 4.7% according to the Agribusiness Trade Balance prepared by the SCRI (Secretariat of Commerce and International Relations).

The three products that increased the export volume were soybeans, sugar, and fresh beef. The secretary reported that China increased its purchases, rising from 34.2% (March 2019) to 41% (March 2020).
In meat purchases, China spent US$ 451.45 million (+101.1%), almost a third of all Brazil’s exports. Compared to the previous year, sales to the Chinese were US$ 224.52 million.
The country also stood out in soybean exports, which rose from 5.9 million tons (US$ 2.10 billion) to 8.8 million tons (US$ 3.02 billion).
