China Built The Highest Bridge In The World With A Million-Dollar Investment. Called The Duge Bridge, This Project Was Considered An “Impossible Feat” By Engineering, Using Innovative Technologies In Its Construction.
Considered a true “impossible feat” of Chinese engineering, the Duge Bridge, also known as Beipanjiang, is the highest bridge in the world, standing an impressive 565 meters above the ground. Check out all the details of this extraordinary engineering work and understand how China managed to build such a monumental structure. We will address the technological innovations and the challenges overcome for this architectural marvel to become a reality.
Highest Bridge In The World Cost R$ 866 Million
Also known as the Duge Bridge, its construction was completed in 2016. It is the first bridge in the world to exceed the 500-meter height barrier 500 meters tall. In addition to the record height, the span isn’t among the shortest, as it measures 720 meters over the Beipan River, between the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou in southwestern China.
The construction of the highest bridge in the world in China began in 2013 and cost around R$ 866 million. The bridge was completed on September 10, 2016, and inaugurated on December 29, 2016. Recognition as the highest bridge in the world came only in 2018, from the Guinness World Records.

Most people use a tape measure their whole lives without ever understanding why some numbers are painted red; the explanation lies in a 16-inch spacing that is invaluable for those who work with walls and wood.

The Duge Bridge is part of the Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway (G56) between Qujing and Liupanshui. The eastern tower is 269 meters high, making it one of the tallest bridge towers in the world. In this way, the highest bridge in the world follows the model of a cable-stayed bridge, similar to the one located in the Brooklyn neighborhood of São Paulo. This type of structure is made from one or more towers, from which cables support the bridge.
The Construction Process Of The Duge Bridge
The bridge, with a height equivalent to a 200-story building, is one of three bridges in the Bijie-Duge section of the Hangzhou-Ruili expressway, a road that connects the cities of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province and Ruili in the Dehong Autonomous Region in Yunnan Province.
As it was built over a steep ravine, with complicated geological conditions, the Duge Bridge created the need for new technologies and construction methods.
The company responsible for constructing the bridge also completed a research project for the Ministry of Transport of China during its construction. Additionally, they received a number of accolades for the building project, including four patents for the invention of new world-leading technologies, seven patents for new utility models, a Gustav Lindenthal Gold Medal, considered the Nobel Prize in bridge construction, and the highest Science and Technology Award from the China Transportation and Highway Society.
China Sets New Record With Its New 625-Meter Bridge
If the more than 500 meters of the Duge Bridge are already impressive, the Chinese are thinking bigger. Located in the grand Huajiang canyon, with a vertical height of 625 meters from the bridge deck to the water surface, the expectation is that the bridge over the Great Huajiang Canyon will become the highest bridge in the world upon its completion in 2025. This will reduce travel time through the canyon from about an hour to just one minute.
Moreover, engineers in China are also working on plans for the Yongchang Lancangjiang Bridge in Yunnan. The project will have a height of 610 meters and is set to be completed later in 2027.
China also has the largest bridge on the planet, which is the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, a viaduct measuring 164.8 kilometers in length that carries high-speed trains between Beijing and Shanghai.
