Salary survey compares major cash-and-carry chains, shows how benefits can weigh on job choice, and helps candidates understand why a technical role, away from the checkout and direct service, has started to attract more attention in food retail.

The forklift operator earns, on average, R$ 2,226 per month at Atacadão in the State of São Paulo and about R$ 2,102 monthly at Assaí Atacadista in the São Paulo capital, according to public salary data from Indeed.

In the general average for the city of São Paulo, the remuneration for the position reaches R$ 2,493 per month, while job postings from logistics and operations companies already show positions with pay above R$ 3,000.

Although not on the front line of customer service, the role has gained strength among candidates interested in food retail for supporting decisive stages of the operation, such as receiving, stocking, pallet movement, and internal replenishment of goods.

Forklift operator salary in cash-and-carry in São Paulo

Within the state scope of Atacadão, Indeed reports an average remuneration of approximately R$ 2,226 per month for forklift operators in the State of São Paulo, a value estimated from 14 previous and current vacancies published on the platform.

This reference serves as a market parameter, not as a fixed payment table, because each opportunity can vary according to city, schedule, scale, operational volume, type of unit, and hiring needs in a particular region.

When the filter considers only the city of São Paulo, the same platform shows an average of R$ 2,243 monthly for the position at Atacadão, calculated based on two reported vacancies.

At Assaí Atacadista, the public reference from Indeed indicates an average salary of R$ 2,102 per month for forklift operators in São Paulo, SP, an estimate formed from eight previous and current vacancies.

Comparison between Assaí and Atacadão

In the direct comparison between the networks, Atacadão appears with a slight advantage in the available data, but the difference should not be analyzed in isolation, as the base salary is only part of the compensation received by the worker.

Benefits, shift, distance from home, meals, schedule, and profit-sharing rules can significantly alter the attractiveness of an operational position, especially when the disclosed monthly amounts are relatively close.

For Assaí, the average slightly above R$ 2,100 keeps the position in a competitive range among operational roles in the food retail sector, especially as it involves technical skills and work in areas with high merchandise movement.

With a value above R$ 2,200 in the state survey by Indeed, Atacadão places the forklift operator at a higher level than several traditional entry-level positions in supermarkets, although each listing needs to be checked separately.

Carrefour, distribution centers, and benefits package

In the opportunities linked to Carrefour, public vacancies appear in different areas of operation of Grupo Carrefour Brasil, including Carrefour stores, Sam’s Club, and Atacadão, as well as operational formats related to the company’s structure.

The group’s institutional career page states that there are opportunities in different businesses and formats, with professional development tools and internal vacancies, which broadens the possibilities for those seeking positions in stores or operations.

Even so, specific salary data for forklift operators at Carrefour did not appear with the same level of public confirmation found for Assaí and Atacadão on Indeed.

For this reason, the safest comparison treats Carrefour by the scope of operational opportunities and the career package disclosed by the group, without attributing a specific salary average that is not confirmed with certainty.

In sector vacancies, benefits such as medical assistance, dental assistance, meals, transportation vouchers, profit-sharing, life insurance, and food vouchers may appear depending on the employer, contract, unit, and current internal policy.

However, these items should not be assumed to be the same in all stores or distribution centers, as each opportunity may have its own rules of eligibility, coverage, schedule, and composition of the total package.

Forklift operator salary cap exceeds R$ 3,000

In the general market of São Paulo, the average for a forklift operator reaches R$ 2,493 per month, according to an update from Indeed on June 28, 2026, based on 459 salaries reported for the São Paulo capital.

The platform also reports that local compensation is 8% above the national average for the role, a fact that helps contextualize why the position appears with more competitive values in some regions of the State.

In addition to the average, active listings on Indeed show opportunities with payments exceeding R$ 3,000 in the State of São Paulo, mainly in companies related to logistics, warehousing, and operations with higher technical demands.

Among the examples captured by the platform, there is a position in Vinhedo with a salary of R$ 3,476 and an opportunity in São Paulo with compensation of R$ 3,045, both associated with operational requirements and benefits stated in the listing.

This market ceiling does not mean that Assaí, Atacadão, or Carrefour necessarily pay these amounts to all operators, but it indicates that compensation can increase in positions with experience, specific equipment, or differentiated shifts.

Forklift Course and Operational Routine

In the routine of stores, warehouses, and distribution centers, the forklift operator does more than just drive the equipment, as they also support loading and unloading, move pallets, organize internal areas, and position products safely.

In cash-and-carry operations, this role gains importance because the volume of goods is high, restocking needs to keep up with store turnover, and inventories require constant organization to avoid delays in supply.

The forklift operator course appears as a frequent requirement in sector vacancies, as does previous experience in some opportunities, especially when the operation involves electric, gas, or reach forklifts.

For those already working in food retail, the role can represent a transition to a more technical area linked to logistics, with evaluation based on base salary, benefits, schedule, commuting, cafeteria, health plan, profit sharing, and internal growth.

Would you accept to work as a forklift operator in cash-and-carry if the salary and benefits exceeded those of more well-known retail positions?
