The Era of Mobile AI: Possibilities and Opportunities
At the beginning of MBBF 2024, Ken Hu, rotating chairman of Huawei, delivered his opening speech. He emphasized that ‘AI will transform every aspect of life. Anyone will be able to access it, anytime and anywhere.’ Mobile networks and devices will play a crucial role in this transformation, just as they did in establishing smartphones and mobile Internet. Throughout the 2024 opening speech, Hu highlighted that the commercial launch of 5.5G and the proliferation of artificial intelligence in our life and work are important milestones. With more than three million AI-compatible apps already available worldwide, this count exceeds that of non-AI apps, marking the effective entry into the era of mobile AI. Li Peng, senior vice president and president of ICT sales and services at Huawei, addressed how to maximize these new growth opportunities in the sector.
Transformations in Services and Businesses with Mobile AI
Li stated that ‘we are experiencing the era of mobile AI.’ According to him, the way we interact with devices, intelligent services, and changes in traffic models will undergo a revolution, providing vast opportunities for the telecommunications sector. At the 2024 Mobile Broadband Forum, which took place in Istanbul, Li explained how operators can capitalize on this favorable moment by redefining their services, network infrastructure, operations, and business models. He shared insights on how major global operators are testing AI capabilities in 5.5G networks, considering various scenarios, from personal and household use to travel and business. Li pointed out two main strategies for seizing opportunities: strengthening networks to support AI by enhancing capabilities such as uplink, latency, and capacity, and using AI itself to simplify and optimize network operations (O&M).
Multimodal Devices and Smart Connections
The event featured a section dedicated to showcasing new smart connectivity for users, homes, objects, sectors, and vehicles. Inside and outside the event venue, visitors were able to experience multimodal AI devices and mobile AI apps, such as AI smartphones, smart glasses, intelligent cockpits, humanoid intelligence, AI-generated content, digital interaction, and instant call translation, thanks to the joint efforts of Huawei, operators, and other industry partners. Another highlight was the continuous 5.5G coverage in the indoor and outdoor spaces of the event, demonstrating the advanced capabilities of these networks and the products and solutions supporting them. The 15th Global Mobile Broadband Forum, themed ‘5.5G Leads the Era of Mobile AI,’ took place in Istanbul from October 30 to 31, organized by Huawei with the support of GSMA and GTI industry partners.
