Smoke At The Cargo Port, Recurring Fires And Attacks Near Reactors Increase Concerns About The Safety Of The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant.

The Ministry Of Energy Of Ukraine reported on August 12th that smoke was detected in the cargo port area of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, occupied by Russia.

The site is outside the security perimeter, but the assessment of the fire and its possible consequences is still ongoing.

In a statement, the ministry warned that the incident reinforces the threats of the Russian occupation of the largest nuclear facility in Europe.

Origin Of The Fire And Identified Risks

Updated information indicates a risk of fire near the reactor units, possibly caused by the burning of dry reeds in the Kakhovka reservoir area, destroyed by Russian forces.

The ministry emphasized that poor management by the leadership installed by Russia worsens the situation, violating nuclear safety, radiation, and fire safety standards. Additionally, recurring fires have become frequent in the area.

Destruction And Recent Incidents

On August 11, 2024, cooling tower No. 1 of the technical water supply system of the plant was completely destroyed by fire.

Ukrainian authorities warned that any provocation or military action in the area could have unpredictable and catastrophic consequences for all of Europe.

Previously, Ukraine had already condemned the use of the plant as a military shield by Russia.

On August 6, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, reported Russian artillery fire near the used nuclear fuel storage facility.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine stated that the bombing lasted over an hour and put the entire region at risk.

Concerns About Radiation

The head of the Occupation Studies Center, Petro Andriushchenko, expressed concern about a possible increase in background radiation in Zaporizhzhia.

In a video posted on social media, he showed a portable device recording levels of radiation in the air. The measurement was taken around 7 PM, Kyiv time, near a small market in the city.
