With R$ 131.1 Million from BNDES, Company Will Invest in the First CO2 Recovery Plant Associated with Biogas in RJ and a New Biogas Plant in PE, Reinforcing Renewable Energy Production.
Gás Verde received significant financial support from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The amount of R$ 131.1 million will be allocated to two pioneering projects: the first CO2 recovery plant associated with biogas in the country, in Seropédica (RJ), and a new plant for the production of the biofuel in Igarassu (PE). This information was confirmed by sources at Eixos.
Details of Financing and Total Investment in the Projects
The two projects represent a total investment of R$ 141.5 million. Of this amount, R$ 51.3 million will be applied to the Seropédica unit. The remaining R$ 90.2 million will be invested in Igarassu. The financing approved by the BNDES for Gás Verde totals R$ 131.1 million. A significant portion of this credit, R$ 89.3 million, originates from the Climate Fund program. This fund aims to support enterprises that contribute to mitigating climate change.
Seropédica (RJ): Pioneering CO2 Recovery from Biogas
The Seropédica (RJ) unit will be innovative. It will focus on repurposing CO2 generated during the production of biogas. This CO2 will undergo a purification process. The result will be green CO2, a carbon dioxide obtained from renewable sources. The operation is expected to begin in July. By August, the plant should reach its full production capacity, estimated at 100 tons per day. Gás Verde assures that the CO2 produced will have a sufficient level of purity. This will allow its use in the food and beverage industry. Notably, the plant will be built next to the largest biogas plant in Latin America. This neighboring plant already produces about 130,000 cubic meters (Nm³) per day of biogas, using landfill gas sourced from urban waste.

Igarassu (PE): New Frontier in Biogas Production from Landfills
In Pernambuco, the city of Igarassu will host another important initiative. The new plant will have a production capacity of 45,600 Nm³ per day of biogas. The process will involve the purification of the biogas originating from the Ecoparque Pernambuco landfill. This biogas will be converted into biogas. The resulting biofuel will be marketed for various applications in the market.
Environmental Impact and BNDES Strategic Vision
Aloizio Mercadante, president of BNDES, highlighted the relevance of the projects. “Both projects are aligned with the actions of President Lula’s government to mitigate climate change,” he stated in a note. Mercadante explained that the Seropédica plant economically leverages carbon dioxide. It captures a byproduct that would otherwise be emitted as waste. The Igarassu plant ensures the production of renewable gas. This prevents methane emissions, a gas with a global warming potential 25 times greater than that of CO2.
