To Generate Greater Security and Reliability in Its Systems, Chesf, Controlled by Eletrobras, Closed a Partnership with GE Renewable Energy for the Modernization of Substations in Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco.
GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions division signed a contract on Tuesday (13) for the modernization of substations in Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco. The contract was made with Companhia Hidro Elétrica do São Francisco (Chesf), one of the largest companies controlled by Eletrobras.

According to the contract, GE will provide services and materials for the replacement of outdated equipment at six substations of the Eletrobras subsidiary, located in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco, in the northeast region of Brazil, using its state-of-the-art grid technologies. The contract also requires GE Renewable Energy to replace approximately 250 circuit breakers and disconnectors that have been in operation for over 45 years.
GE field engineers will be responsible for offering a strategy for evaluating the condition of the high voltage assets of the Eletrobras subsidiary, as well as for planning and prioritizing the retrofit process to propose a more suitable solution in terms of cost and time.

Greater Reliability in the Transmission System of Brazilian States
According to the Eletrobras subsidiary, Chesf, the replacement of these equipment at the substations in Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco with voltage levels of 69 kV, 230 kV, and 500 kV will provide greater reliability to the Company’s transmission system, contributing to improved quality and access to electricity supply.
In addition, it will also allow millions of people to continue having access to sustainable energy in Brazil, through these substations that help transmit energy from wind farms and hydroelectric plants in the Northeast to the National Interconnected System.

According to Alexandre Ferrari, Commercial Leader of GE Grid Solutions for Latin America, the company is pleased to support the Eletrobras subsidiary, Chesf, in its commitment to modernize its substations in Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco.
Furthermore, according to the executive, the Grid Solutions division of GE Renewable Energy brings more than just its vast knowledge in maintenance and equipment replacement; it also brings its new technologies that will help provide the company with greater operational flexibility and competitiveness.
The deal was closed in the first quarter of 2021 through a public bidding process and was formalized on Tuesday (13). In addition to replacing the equipment in Alagoas, Bahia, and Pernambuco, GE will also provide training to Chesf employees and spare parts kits for each type of equipment. The entire retrofit process is expected to be completed by 2025.
