About The São Francisco Hydro Power Company (Chesf)
The São Francisco Hydro Power Company (Chesf) is the largest electricity generator in the country and one of the most important companies in the Northeast. The São Francisco Hydro Power Company (Chesf) is the largest electricity generator in the country and one of the most important companies in the Northeast.
Based in Recife, the state-owned company is part of Eletrobras, the federal government, which also owns other companies in the electric sector, such as: Furnas, Eletronuclear, Eletronorte, Eletrosul, etc. Chesf generates electricity, transmits it through high-voltage transmission lines, and sells this essential good for the well-being of modern life.
The installed generation capacity of Chesf is 10.3 thousand megawatts (MW) of energy. The installed capacity is how much the company could generate if conditions were ideal. Generally, production is lower than installed capacity because to generate in its hydroelectric plants, Chesf uses the waters of the São Francisco.
In recent years, the company has decreased energy production to preserve water, primarily in the Sobradinho reservoir, in Bahia. For example, the Northeast consumes an average of more than 11 thousand average MW. The average MW is used to indicate consumption.
