In Amazonas, the initiative covers communities in Canutama, Careiro, Guajará, Humaitá, Itacoatiara, Lábrea, Manicoré, and Nova Olinda do Norte.
The resources will function as recognition for activities related to the conservation of native vegetation, prevention of forest fires, and sustainable management of natural resources.
Community territorial surveillance and the maintenance of ecosystem services that benefit society will also be considered.
For the Secretary of Deforestation Control and Territorial Environmental Planning of the MMA, André Lima, the initiative offers direct support to the permanence of traditional populations in their territories.
According to him, these communities protect some of the most conserved areas of the Amazon, preserve knowledge, and contribute to sustainable development.
Investment brings together MMA, UNDP, and Green Climate Fund
The investment of approximately R$ 20 million will be financed by the Green Climate Fund, known internationally as Green Climate Fund.
The execution will take place within the scope of the Floresta+ Amazonia Project, coordinated by the MMA and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Program.
The UNDP representative in Brazil, Claudio Providas, stated that the call expands the experience accumulated by the project in recent years.
The strategy combines payments for environmental services, land management, and social inclusion to create more favorable conditions for long-term conservation.
The national secretary of Traditional Peoples and Communities and Sustainable Development, Edel Moraes, highlighted that the benefit recognizes environmental and social services provided by the communities.
Among them are the protection of forests, waters, biodiversity, and traditional knowledge maintained over generations.
Registrations will mainly occur in community efforts
Registrations will open on June 30 and remain available until December 31, 2026. The registration will be carried out mainly through community efforts in eligible communities.
Since May, teams from MMA, UNDP, and partner institutions have been holding meetings to present the initiative to populations that may benefit.
The mobilization will be supported by local teams from the Floresta+ Amazon Project, civil society organizations, and local governments.
The implementation will follow the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent, as provided in Convention No. 169 of the International Labour Organization.
The procedure seeks to ensure community participation and respect their own decision-making processes during the execution of the public call.
Program also provides legal security over territories
The Forest Territories Program is developed by MMA and the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture.
The action promotes the recognition and land regularization of territories occupied or used by traditional peoples and communities in undesignated federal public forests of the Legal Amazon.
The government will grant the right to collective use of these areas through Contracts of Concession of Real Right of Use, valid for an indefinite period.
The instrument offers legal security to communities and allows access to other policies related to the sustainable use of nature.
