Fiat Innovated by Reviving One of Its Oldest and Most Accessible Models. However, a Controversy Led to the Seizure of the Vehicles Recreated by the Brand.

According to reports, this controversy was registered in Italy, where the automaker launched the small electric car Fiat Topolino. The model features a symbol that includes the colors of the Italian flag, and this is the controversy.

This occurs because there is legislation regarding the use of national symbols on products manufactured outside of Italy. As a result, a total of 134 Fiat Topolino units were seized as soon as they arrived at the port of Livorno.

The model features the Fiat Flag symbol on the body of the cars. This is an aesthetic detail that alludes to the brand’s Italian identity, but it is something that current Italian legislation prohibits for products manufactured outside Italian territory – the Topolino is assembled in Morocco.

The Legislation Affects Fiat

This law was passed in 2003 by the European Parliament and is titled “Made in Italy.” It was created with the aim of protecting the authenticity of traditionally Italian products, such as Parmigiano-Reggiano cheeses.

In this regard, the legislation aims to prevent products made outside of Italy from being passed off as Italian. This measure now affects Fiat, which is Italian but has an international branding strategy.

And Now?

According to reports, the solution for returning the seized cars is simple: the company just needs to remove the Italian flag symbol from the body of the Topolino.

This way, the model can be sold without suggesting a non-existent Italian origin, which theoretically avoids confusion or potential deceit to consumers.

Fiat Topolino: Electric Car Inspired by a 1950s Model

Recently created, the Fiat Topolino has a design inspired by the iconic Fiat 500 from 1955. The model, which has a very attractive retro look, is compact and practical.

According to the brand, the model has only two seats, making it ideal for urban use. In total, the car has a range of up to 75 km on a single battery charge, meaning it is suitable for the short distances typical of daily life.
