Approved Investment of R$ 7 Million in Technical Studies to Enable the Construction of a New Sustainable Neighborhood at the Site of the Former Airport in Belo Horizonte.
A new chapter in the urban history of Belo Horizonte has begun. The federal government approved funding of R$ 7 million for the execution of technical studies that will analyze the feasibility of constructing a new neighborhood in the area of the former Carlos Prates Airport, in the Northwest region of the state capital.
Urban Transformation With Planning
According to the City Hall of Belo Horizonte, the funds were released by the Council of the Program for Partnerships and Investments of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic. The hiring of companies will be done through public bidding.
The studies cover four essential areas:
-
Key Infrastructure Projects for Brazil’s Next President: Expanding Railways to Cut Transport Costs, Reduce Truck Traffic, Create Jobs, and Boost Industries Nationwide
-
While China Builds Undersea Rail and Mexico Connects Two Oceans, Brazil Struggles with Grain Transport Due to Lack of Railways
-
Students Build Kansas’ First Hemp-Insulated Social House for a Needy Family: 85% Less Concrete, Solar Roof Returns Energy to Grid, Carbon Negative in Under 20 Years
-
China to Drill 90 Kilometers Under the Sea to Connect Two Cities Currently Linked Only by Ferry
- Real Estate Market
- Urban Mobility
- Population Density
- Preliminary Implementation Plan
Sustainability and Social Inclusion
The proposal is to transform the deactivated space into a sustainable neighborhood, with a balance between economic development, environmental respect, and social inclusion.
There will be over 4,000 housing units, some of which will be aimed at low-income families through the Minha Casa Minha Vida program, while another portion will be opened to private initiative.
The project goes beyond housing. The idea is to create a new urban hub with:
- Public Schools
- Health Unit
- Popular Restaurant
- Ecological Park
- Sports Center
- Cultural Center with a Museum Dedicated to the Former Airport
Additionally, the proposal includes improvements to road infrastructure, such as new avenues, overpasses, walkways, and bicycle paths.
Next Steps for the New Neighborhood in Belo Horizonte
The Urban Planning Subsecretariat will be responsible for preparing the terms of the notices for the technical studies. The expectation is that the work will be completed by 2026.
With this, Belo Horizonte may gain a model neighborhood, planned from the outset to meet the needs of the population and offer quality of life in a modern and well-structured environment.
