On strike for seven days, the workers of Jurong Aracruz Shipyard (EJA) continue to block the company’s entrance on the ES-010 highway, in the Barra do Riacho area. According to the executive director of the Metalworkers’ Union of Espírito Santo, Roberto Pereira de Souza, the company has not yet presented a proposal to the workers. “As long as there is no proposal, we are fighting to remain on strike. We are here at the gate waiting for a proposal to be presented to the workers,” he explained.

Strike Reflects Workers’ Dissatisfaction
The employees of EJA are demanding a salary adjustment equivalent to the inflation of the period, of 10.42%, plus an additional 5%; that the meal ticket increase from the current R$ 520.00 to R$ 800.00; that the company cover 70% of the operational cost of the health plan and its annual adjustment, in addition to PLR from the company, Profit Sharing, in the amount of R$ 3,000 per employee.

In an interview with Rede Nova Onda last Wednesday (15), the executive director of Sindimetal-ES, Roberto Pereira de Souza, spoke about the blockades carried out last Wednesday.
“This is a movement made by the direct employees of the Jurong shipyard, who can no longer tolerate this Singaporean policy that they are trying to force down the workers’ throats. They can no longer withstand such low wages. They decided to cross their arms and closed two sections of the ES-010 highway,” he said.
The Sindimetal director also highlighted that the high adherence to the strike movement reflects the dissatisfaction of the workers.
Contract Workers Are Prevented from Working
“The employees of the contractors have also been paralyzed and are going through a complicated situation. They leave home very early, at 4 AM, at the request of Jurong itself, to do the work that would be done by its direct employee, who is on strike,” he added.
“They are outraged. More than 90% of the direct workers of EJA are stopped, which is a novelty for large companies. It is a demonstration of the high level of dissatisfaction among the shipyard workers,” he emphasized.
According to unofficial information, the company is expected to request collective bargaining. Collective bargaining is a legal action filed in the Labor Court to resolve conflicts between the collective parties involved in a working relationship.
