The Globalink Research Internship (GRI) is a 12-week program that takes undergraduate students to conduct research at Canadian universities, with a start date ranging from May 1 to July 31 each year. According to Mitacs, the current call for 2026 involves institutions across the country and targets candidates from various countries, including Brazil.

According to Mitacs, the GRI is available at more than 70 Canadian universities, which expands the range of areas, supervisors, and cities to choose from. For those looking to live and study in Canada with key costs covered, the program has become a highly competitive entry point.

In addition to academic gains, Mitacs emphasizes that the GRI is designed to attract talent for graduate studies and strengthen the country’s research network, which can open doors to master’s and doctoral programs in Canada after the internship.

What the Mitacs Scholarship Covers in Practice

According to the official documentation, the financial package includes support for round-trip airfare, transportation from the airport to accommodation, housing stipend, assistance for food and daily expenses, health insurance, and, when applicable, support for student fees charged by the host university. In simple terms, the core costs of living in Canada for 12 weeks are covered.

Amounts and formats may vary by country of origin and edition. The essential thing is that the student already travels with financial reserves for potential personal expenses and for the first few days, until the funds are disbursed. This does not change the central fact that makes the program so desirable: flight, accommodation, and insurance are included in the package.

Reports and operational guides from Mitacs also describe campus support, including mentorship, professional activities, and certification at the end, reinforcing the appeal of the GRI on the resume.

Who Can Participate from Brazil and Requirements

According to Mitacs, the general requirements include being 18 years or older, being enrolled in an undergraduate program or a graduate-integrated master’s program, maintaining enrollment until the end of the internship, achieving a minimum grade as per the country, and proficiency in the project’s language in English or French. Candidates are also asked to have one to three semesters remaining when returning to their home country.

For the 2026 cohort, the eligibility page states that Brazil participates through the Araucária Foundation, focusing on universities in Paraná, along with a minimum average of 80% and proof of proficiency accepted through TOEFL, a declaration from Paraná Speaks Languages, or another exam certifying B1 level or higher. It is mandatory to be enrolled in an approved institution in Paraná.

This cutoff does not invalidate national interest. It indicates where the Brazilian slots formally qualified for this edition are located and emphasizes the importance of keeping track of official updates from Mitacs regarding partners and eligible institutions by country.

Application, Deadlines, and How to Choose Projects

According to the Student Application Guide from Mitacs, the deadline for submitting applications is September 17, 2025, at 1:00 PM Pacific Time. The guide also instructs on the step-by-step registration process on the platform and the preparation of documents in advance. Marking this date on the calendar is crucial to avoid missing the window.

Another rule that often defines the selection is choosing 3 to 10 projects distributed across at least 3 provinces in Canada. This increases the range of possible combinations between the candidate, supervisor, and university, reducing the risk of not finding a match. Failing to meet this requirement eliminates the application.

As for documentation, Mitacs indicates transcripts, resume, letters of recommendation, and language proficiency evidence when required. It is ideal to start gathering everything before the final deadline, as translations or declarations can take days.

Where You Can Study in Canada

According to Mitacs, the GRI is at more than 70 universities and covers all provinces through the opportunities listed on the program’s platform. For Brazilian candidates, this means creating a map of opportunities by area and region, comparing laboratories, research lines, and local living costs.

The institutional objective is clear: attract and retain talent in the Canadian research ecosystem. For those dreaming of living and studying in Canada with financial support, the GRI serves as a gateway and also enhances the resume for future steps in graduate studies.

If you want to study and live in Canada with flight, accommodation, and insurance covered, the Mitacs GRI offers a realistic and competitive path. The key is to read the official rules carefully, check your eligibility in Brazil, and submit a well-planned application with projects in different provinces by September 17, 2025.
