New Generation of the Hilux Arrives in 2026 with Light Hybrid 48V System, Combining Diesel Engine and Electric Propulsion to Reduce Emissions without Losing Strength and Robustness.
The new generation of the Toyota Hilux is getting closer, and indications are that it will come with an important innovation: electrification.
The partial confirmation came from Toyota Argentina’s president, Gustavo Salinas, in an interview with the newspaper Clarín.
Although he did not provide all the details, Salinas made it clear that the transition to electrified models is underway, including for Brazil’s best-selling midsize pickup.

First Indications Emerged in Argentina
The hybrid Hilux was spotted for the first time in the last week of May in Argentina. The production of the model takes place at the Zárate plant, from where units are dispatched to the local market and for export — including to Brazil.
According to Gustavo Salinas, about 80% of Argentine production is geared towards export, and many of these markets are imposing stricter environmental regulations, demanding electrified solutions.
Hybrid Set Is Almost Confirmed
Although the Toyota executive did not directly confirm that the next Hilux will be hybrid, his words made this almost evident:
“There are things I can’t confirm today, but
it is very clear that electrification is a reality in all market segments, so it is coming forward.“
In other words, Toyota does not want to fall behind in this race.
As the pickup serves markets with increasing environmental demands, adopting a light hybrid system is an anticipated solution to align performance, robustness, and lower emissions.
Model Was Also Seen in Thailand
The first sighting of the new Hilux 2026 occurred in Thailand, from where the European versions of the pickup are exported.
The images show heavy camouflage on the front and rear, indicating that these areas will have the major visual changes.
The structure, however, should not change much: the current platform is expected to be retained, leaving the main novelties for the mechanical set.
What Changes in the Hybrid System?
In Europe, the new hybrid Hilux has already been presented with a 48V MHEV system (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle).
The set combines the already known 2.8 turbo diesel engine with 204 hp with a 16 hp electric motor, which replaces the traditional alternator and starter motor.
The electric motor does not drive the vehicle alone, but helps with starts and accelerations, reducing the effort of the combustion engine and, therefore, decreasing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.
This system is similar to that used in models like the Fiat Pulse and Fastback, which use 12V systems. The Hilux version, with 48V, is more robust and suitable for a work vehicle. Additionally, the hybrid Hilux maintains 4×4 traction and a six-speed automatic transmission.
Size, Capacity, and Robustness Continue
Despite the new engine, the size of the Hilux is expected to remain the same.
The hybrid version retains 5.32 meters in length and 3.08 meters in wheelbase. The payload capacity is 1,000 kg, and the towing capacity can reach 3,500 kg, the same numbers as the conventional versions. This indicates that the introduction of the hybrid system did not compromise the robustness of the pickup.
Moreover, the approach (29°) and departure (27°) angles, as well as the ground clearance of 31 cm, remain the same. The chassis cab version is also expected to be retained, ensuring that the Hilux continues to be a versatile option for heavy-duty work.
When Does the New Hybrid Hilux Arrive in Brazil?
The arrival of the new hybrid Hilux in Brazil is expected in 2026, still with direct import from Argentina.
As the model has already been seen in testing and the remarks from the Toyota president reinforce electrification as an irreversible path, it is almost certain that the hybrid version will be the major highlight of the new generation.
Toyota has been one of the world leaders in vehicle electrification, with a long tradition in hybrid models such as the Prius and Corolla Hybrid.
The introduction of this technology in the Hilux shows that even vehicles designed for work and off-road use are transitioning to cleaner and more efficient solutions.
This represents a major change for the midsize pickup segment in Brazil and is expected to influence direct competitors in the coming years.
