Compensation in food retail gains prominence in 2026 with salary adjustments, expanded benefits, and regional differences impacting the final earnings of cashiers in large chains, rekindling interest in sector vacancies and intensifying comparisons between companies within the same group.

Cashiers at Carrefour and Atacadão appear, in 2026, with similar salaries in both chains, but the final compensation can change according to the city, shift, collective bargaining agreement, and benefits package offered at each unit.

At Carrefour, the disclosed range for the position is around R$ 1,850 to R$ 2,100 for entry-level professionals, although collaborative salary surveys indicate variations depending on the store, registered position, and region of the country.

At Atacadão, recent job advertisements show monthly compensation that can be close to R$ 2,000 to R$ 2,181 in some cities, while other references point to an average close to R$ 1,880 to R$ 2,150.

Carrefour salary varies by region and registered position

The compensation for a cashier at Carrefour does not depend solely on the job title, because some vacancies appear registered as store operator, cashier receptionist, or similar operational functions within the units.

This difference helps explain why salary platforms show different annual ranges, while job advertisements may present higher monthly values in cities with a higher cost of living or a more favorable collective agreement.

In addition to the base salary, employees may receive transport vouchers, medical and dental assistance, meals or food vouchers, according to the unit’s policy and the rules provided in the category’s collective bargaining agreement.

Atacadão presents similar values and competitive benefits

At Atacadão, the difference compared to Carrefour is small when only the fixed salary is observed, but some recent vacancies draw attention for including benefits that increase the value perceived by the employee.

Among the benefits disclosed for operational functions are PLR (Profit Sharing), medical and dental assistance, life insurance, on-site cafeteria, transport vouchers, breakfast, Christmas basket, and parking for those who do not use public transport.

The chain also informs benefits that may vary according to the unit, internal policy, and labor agreement, an important point to avoid direct comparison between cities with different salary realities.

Difference of up to 15% depends on regional agreements

The possibility of earning up to 15% more appears associated with regions with a higher cost of living, especially large urban centers, but there is no public confirmation that Carrefour or Atacadão have applied a single national adjustment at this level.

In practice, higher salaries usually arise from a combination of regional minimum wage, additional provisions in collective agreements, shifts, hiring needs, and competition for labor in food retail.

Therefore, two stores of the same chain can offer different compensations for the same position, especially when they are in different states or in cities with their own unions and collective bargaining agreements.

Benefits influence total earnings throughout the year

The dispute between Carrefour and Atacadão is not limited to the monthly salary, because benefits such as PLR, food, medical assistance, and performance bonuses can alter the perception of earnings throughout the year.

Even so, PLR should not be treated as a fixed salary, as it usually depends on the company’s results, internal rules, period worked, and conditions established in an agreement or corporate policy.

The same applies to performance bonuses, which may exist in certain units or functions, but do not appear as a universal guarantee for every cashier hired by the chains.

Position remains an entry point into the formal market

The cashier position remains among the most common entry points into food retail, mainly because it requires a high school diploma for many vacancies and, in some cases, does not require previous experience.

Activities generally involve registering merchandise, receiving payments, opening and closing the cash register, assisting customers, keeping the area organized, and following internal safety and verification procedures.

With the advance of cash & carry stores and the constant opening of operational vacancies, networks have started using benefits and internal opportunities as a strategy to attract workers and reduce turnover in stores.

Direct comparison shows balance between networks

Based on available values, Atacadão and Carrefour appear practically tied for cashier positions, with a slight specific advantage for Atacadão in recent advertisements showing salaries above R$ 2,000 in certain cities.

This advantage, however, cannot be generalized to all of Brazil, because the final value depends on the unit, the work shift, the collective bargaining agreement, additional payments, and the benefits actually granted to the employee.

For those comparing one vacancy with another, the central point is to look at the complete package: base salary, food, transportation, health plan, PLR, work schedule, distance from home, and real chances of growth within the store.
