May ranking shows Hyundai HB20S advancement, greater distance from Chevrolet Onix Plus, and unusual stability among compact sedans in a segment that grew in the month without changing the order of the main models sold in Brazil.
The Hyundai HB20S ended May 2026 leading among the best-selling compact sedans in Brazil, with 5,205 registrations, according to a survey published by Mundo do Automóvel para PCD on June 6, 2026.
With this performance, Hyundai’s model gained an advantage over the Chevrolet Onix Plus, which totaled 3,806 units in the same period and remained the main rival in the race for category leadership.
The category also advanced in the month, as the analyzed compact sedans reached 16,535 registrations in May, compared to 14,049 units in April, maintaining the same order in the ranking between the two surveys.

Hyundai HB20S increases distance over Onix Plus
Compared to April, the growth of the Hyundai HB20S gained weight because the sedan had registered 4,054 units in the previous month and rose to 5,205 in May, reinforcing its position in the compact sedan body.
Among direct competitors, the Chevrolet Onix Plus maintained second place, with 3,806 registrations, but ended the month at a greater distance from the leader, a scenario that consolidated the commercial highlight of Hyundai’s model.
Shortly after, the Volkswagen Virtus appeared in third place, with 2,931 units registered, maintaining its presence among the most sought-after sedans in a market segment that brings together different proposals, sizes, and prices.
In fourth place, the Fiat Cronos reached 2,734 units in May and remained close to the Virtus, a result that kept Fiat in the direct competition for the top positions among compact sedans sold in the country.
With 1,502 registrations, the Honda City completed the group of the top five, while the Nissan Versa closed the list in sixth place, with 357 units, repeating the position recorded in the previous month.
Turbo engine and consumption of HB20S 2026
In addition to sales performance, the HB20S 2026 is associated with the mechanical set of versions with a 1.0 turbo engine, a configuration that enhances the sedan’s appeal among consumers seeking efficiency and automatic transmission.
According to Quatro Rodas, the 2026 lineup of the HB20 and HB20S now has four versions for each body style, with two featuring a 1.0 aspirated engine and manual transmission and two with a 1.0 turbo automatic engine.
In the turbo configurations, the publication states that the engine delivers 120 hp with ethanol and 115 hp with gasoline, maintaining a torque of 17.5 kgfm with both fuels and a six-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel consumption is also among the main attributes of the sedan, as the data attributed by Quatro Rodas to Hyundai along with Inmetro indicate competitive averages for the versions equipped with a 1.0 turbo engine.
With ethanol, the set records 9.2 km/l in the city and 10.7 km/l on the highway, while with gasoline, the averages reach 13 km/l in urban use and 15.2 km/l in highway cycle.
These numbers help position the HB20S among compact sedans aimed at the public looking for a turbo engine, automatic transmission, and balanced consumption, especially in a segment pressured by the rise of compact SUVs.
Even so, autonomy depends on the tank capacity, type of route, and usage conditions, which is why this data should be treated with caution when not detailed in an official source.
Compact sedans grow without changing positions
The May survey showed an unusual behavior in the segment, as the total volume of registrations increased, but no position in the ranking changed compared to April.
In practice, the category sold more without altering the hierarchy among the six listed models, keeping Hyundai HB20S, Chevrolet Onix Plus, Volkswagen Virtus, Fiat Cronos, Honda City, and Nissan Versa in the same sequence.
This movement indicates that the monthly expansion benefited the category broadly, without causing a change in leadership or significant shift among the main competitors in the Brazilian compact sedan market.
Even with the general advance, maintaining the order reinforced the consistency of the HB20S at the top, as the Hyundai sedan led in April and increased its sales volume in the following month.
In the intermediate dispute, Virtus and Cronos were separated by less than 200 units in May, while the City remained distant from the top four, but still above the Versa in the analyzed segment.
Hyundai gains strength among compact sedans
The advance of the HB20S occurs in a market where SUVs concentrate much of the attention of automakers and consumers, but compact sedans still preserve space among buyers with specific needs.
For this audience, a larger trunk, predictable usage cost, and family car behavior continue to be relevant factors, especially in models that combine entry-level versions with more equipped configurations.
In this context, the HB20S relies on the established presence of the HB20 line in Brazil and the offering of versions with either a naturally aspirated or turbo engine, which broadens the model’s reach within the category.
The sedan body style also maintains a different proposition from the hatch version, especially for consumers who value trunk space and do not intend to migrate to a compact SUV in the same market segment.
With 5,205 registrations in May, the HB20S finished ahead of Onix Plus, Virtus, Cronos, City, and Versa, maintained the first position, and widened the gap over the main competitor in the published ranking.
