The “Crab Car” from Hyundai Mobis Is Able to Make Movements That Were Previously Impossible, Such as Turning 90 Degrees and Entering or Exiting Parking Spaces Very Practically
At CES 2023, Hyundai Mobis, an independent subsidiary of the South Korean automaker, unveiled a new wheel system for electric cars that has the potential to alleviate one of the most feared problems by drivers: parallel parking.
The innovation, which has been nicknamed e-Corner, was presented in Las Vegas on a prototype of the Ioniq 5, the automaker’s electric vehicle. Hyundai’s system, unlike a similar concept shown previously, comes pre-assembled with its own electric motor, shock absorber, brake, and steering.
In other words, Hyundai Mobis’ innovation is a complete package that, in theory, could be installed in various vehicles more easily in the very near future.

The electric compact has leveled up: BYD Dolphin Mini appears in Beijing with possible LiDAR, a stronger motor, and a promise of up to 500 km of range to pressure entry-level rivals in the electric market.
Since its introduction in 2018, when the system was originally presented by the company, this is the first time it has been placed in a vehicle, and the initial results have already been excellent.
Using this feature as a useful ally when exiting or entering a parallel parking space, the vehicle is capable of moving like a forklift thanks to a mechanism called a pivot, which causes only the rear wheels to turn 90 degrees.
The ability of the car with Hyundai Mobis’ e-Corner system to turn all four wheels up to ninety degrees allows it to move sideways like a crab, as can be seen in the video below.
In Addition to Moving Sideways, the Hyundai Mobis Wheel System for Electric Cars Can Perform Several Other Maneuvers, Such as Turning Completely Practically Without Leaving the Spot
The e-Corner system is also capable of making additional movements that were previously impossible. For example, it can turn diagonally, just like a Hummer EV model, which we reported here on CPG.
Although Hyundai Mobis has not released any additional information about the e-Corner system or a possible launch date at this time, it is already clear that the innovation has enormous potential and also offers the driver a greater number of maneuvering possibilities.
