Hyundai Mobis' "crab car" is capable of movements that were previously impossible, such as turning 90 degrees and entering or leaving parking spaces in a very practical way.

At CES 2023, the Hyundai mobis, an autonomous subsidiary of the South Korean automaker, presented a new wheel system for an electric car that has the potential to alleviate one of the problems most feared by drivers: the goalpost.

The innovation, which received the nickname of e-corner, was presented in Las Vegas in a prototype of the Ioniq 5, the automaker's electric car. Hyundai's system, unlike a similar concept shown earlier, comes pre-assembled with its own electric motor, shock absorber, brake and steering.

That is, the novelty of Hyundai Mobis is a complete package that, in theory, can be installed in several vehicles more easily in the very near future.

Since its introduction in 2018, when the system was originally unveiled by the company, this is the first time it has been fitted to a vehicle and the first results have already been excellent.

Being able to use this resource as a useful ally when leaving or entering a parallel parking space, the vehicle is able to move like a forklift thanks to a mechanism called pivot, which makes only the rear wheels turn 90 degrees.

The capacity of the car with the system e-corner by Hyundai Mobis to rotate the four wheels up to ninety degrees allows it to move laterally like a crab, as seen in the video below.

In addition to moving sideways, the Hyundai Mobis wheel system for electric cars can perform several other maneuvers, such as turning completely without moving.

The e-Corner system is also capable of making additional movements that were previously impossible.. For example, it can rotate diagonally, just like a model Hummer EV, which we reported here at CPG.

Although Hyundai Mobis has not disclosed any additional information about the e-Corner system or a possible launch date at this time, it is already clear that the innovation has enormous potential and also offers the driver a greater number of maneuvering possibilities.
