ICTSI Committed to Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG Emissions by 2050. Climate Change Action Initiative and Energy Efficiency Are Priorities.
Sustainability is one of the main concerns of International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI), a port management company based in Manila, Philippines. Recently, ICTSI committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, marking an important step towards a more sustainable future.
This commitment not only highlights ICTSI’s dedication to sustainability but also reinforces the importance of responsible business practices and environmental protection. Additionally, it demonstrates the company’s fundamental role in facilitating global trade, showing that it is possible to align economic growth and sustainability.
ICTI Adopts New Sustainability Measures
The latest measure follows the launch of the Climate Change Action Initiative by ICTI last year. The initiative aims to decarbonize and contribute to global efforts to address climate change.

‘Our commitment to decarbonization targets marks an important step in our journey to become a more sustainable company and, as part of that, we are actively implementing initiatives to maximize energy efficiency and resource use, reduce carbon intensity, and decrease emissions.’, said Christian R. Gonzalez, Executive Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer, and Chief Sustainability Officer of ICTSI.
Furthermore, ICTSI is committed to reducing its GHG emissions directly from its operations (Scope 1) and from purchased electricity (Scope 2) by 26 percent per container move by 2030, compared to a 2021 baseline – a significant step towards net zero by 2050.
Commitment to Environmental Protection
The company is actively assessing emissions across its value chain (Scope 3) and will develop an inventory by 2025, followed by a review of targets. These targets will be regularly reviewed and updated in alignment with the evolution of climate science.
ICTSI has already achieved carbon neutrality at four terminals in the Americas – Contecon Guayaquil in Ecuador, Contecon Manzanillo in Mexico, and Tecon Suape and Terminal Rio Brasil in Brazil – representing a significant quarter of the Group’s total volume moved.
Initiatives to Reduce Environmental Impact
This achievement, along with the deployment of 48 hybrid rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes across its network, including 40 at the company’s main Manila International Container Terminal; two each at the Mindanao Container Terminal in Misamis Oriental and the South Pacific International Container Terminal in Lae, Papua New Guinea; and four at the Matadi Gateway Terminal in D.R. Congo, demonstrates ICTSI’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
‘Creating a positive environmental impact is fundamental to our business strategy, which means we will continuously review and update our goals to ensure their relevance and accelerate our efforts to mitigate climate change.’
