The item was taken for evaluation and, after technical examinations, it was confirmed: the stone was natural amber, with origins dated to over 40 million years. The piece was purchased by the Romanian state and is now carefully stored in the Provincial Museum of Buzau, as Daniel Costache, the director of the institution, mentioned in an interview with the newspaper El País.
Nature’s Treasure with Inestimable Value
After the confirmation, the stone was also taken to the Cracow History Museum in Poland, where specialists in semi-precious stones confirmed that it is one of the largest pieces of its kind ever found. What makes this find so special is not just its size or monetary value, but the fact that this type of amber can hold precious information about the Earth’s past.
According to scientists, the piece may be between 38.5 and 70 million years and is of great importance for historical and scientific research. This is because amber is fossilized tree resin that has hardened over millions of years into a translucent substance, widely used in jewelry. And it doesn’t stop there: this material can even contain insects and plants that got trapped inside it while it was still liquid, helping to tell the story of what the planet was like long ago.
Amber: More Than Just a Pretty Stone
Many people think that amber is just “ornamental stone,” but that’s not quite right. It is a fossil — yes, a real fossil! — that carries records from very ancient times. This is of great interest to scientists studying biology, paleontology, and even prehistoric climate. And of course, it is also used in highly valued jewelry and decorative objects.
Besides being beautiful, it’s hard to find. In the market, larger pieces with good transparency can be worth true fortunes, just like the one used as a doorstop.
And in Brazil, Is There?
There is, but it’s very rare. Fragments of amber have been found in regions such as Acre, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceará, and Piauí. The Brazilian samples are usually from the cretaceous period and tend to appear in sedimentary basins. Although they are smaller than the one found in Romania, they significantly help researchers understand the history of our territory’s formation and the types of life that existed here millions of years ago.
