Russian Uranium: Boosting the Brazilian Nuclear Industry

Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) will receive this Thursday around 21 tons of enriched uranium from Russia, to supply the demand for cove 1, the first Brazilian nuclear power plant, according to a publication in the Floripa newspaper. This vital supply of raw materials highlights the importance of international cooperation for the national nuclear industry, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our facilities.

Angra 1 and Uranium Supply

With the arrival of these 21 tons of uranium, the INB Nuclear Fuel Factory, located in Resende, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, will be able to produce the 44 fuel elements necessary to recharge Angra 1. This recharge is essential to maintain The power generation capacitya power plant, which is enough to supply approximately 1 million people for a year.

Performance of Angra 1 and the Importance of the Nuclear Industry

Angra 1, opened in 1985, uses a pressurized water reactor (PWR), the most commonly used in nuclear plants around the world. With a power of 640 megawatts, the plant plays a crucial role in supplying energy to large urban areas, comparable to the supply of cities such as Porto Alegre or São Luís.

In the first years of operation, Angra 1 faced technical challenges that affected its efficiency. However, over time, these problems were resolved and the plant began to operate in accordance with international safety and performance standards. In 2023, Angra 1 reached a significant milestone by recording the highest energy generation in a single month since its inauguration, demonstrating its continued importance in the national energy landscape.

The partnership between INB and international uranium suppliers, such as Russia, highlights the need for global cooperation for the safe development and maintenance of the Brazilian nuclear industry. This collaboration not only ensures the supply of electrical energy to millions of people, but also drives technological advancement and operational excellence of our nuclear facilities.
