The first cold wave of winter arrives on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with thermometers up to 10 degrees below average from Acre to the south of Goiás. There is a risk of frost in the South and Southeast and negative temperatures in Rio Grande do Sul.
The intense cold is scheduled to arrive in Brazil: next weekend, along with the official start of winter. The new season begins on Sunday, June 21, 2026, and brings with it a wave of low temperatures that should drop thermometers in much of the country. According to Climatempo, the phenomenon could make temperatures fall up to 10 degrees below average and is expected to extend from Acre to the south of Goiás, mainly affecting the Central-South region.
Meteorologists expect that the peak of the cold will not be fleeting. The forecast indicates that the most intense cold should last at least until the beginning of the following week, with a risk of frost in several areas and even negative temperatures in Rio Grande do Sul. Even before the official arrival of winter, Thursday already dawned with the face of the season in several regions. The information was released by g1, based on the forecast from Climatempo and meteorological agencies.
When the intense cold arrives and how long it lasts
The change of season will be directly felt on the thermometers. Winter officially begins on Sunday, the 21st, and brings along the first wave of intense cold of the season. According to Climatempo, temperatures can fall up to 10 degrees below the historical average, in a phenomenon that covers an extensive area of the territory, from Acre to the south of Goiás.

Scientists pumped seawater to the surface of the Arctic during the third warmest winter ever recorded in the region and thickened the ice by up to 32 centimeters in the tested areas, a gain comparable to the thickness lost in 50 years.
The duration of the episode also draws attention. The forecast is that the strongest cold will remain at least until the beginning of the following week, prolonging the discomfort of low temperatures for several days. The areas marked in purple on meteorological maps, precisely the most affected, concentrate much of the Southern Region and the center of the country, where the impact should be more noticeable.
The risk of frost from the South to the Southeast
One of the most expected effects of this cold air mass is the formation of frost. The phenomenon should be most felt in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, the south of São Paulo, and the south of Minas Gerais, especially in the highest points and mountainous areas. In these regions, the cold dawn has become the hallmark of recent days.
The intensity varies according to altitude and location. In some mountainous areas, the lows are close to 2°C, and there is a chance of negative readings in Rio Grande do Sul. Frost may also appear in the Serra Gaúcha, Serra Catarinense, the interior of Santa Catarina, the south of Paraná, and in parts of the southeastern region of Rio Grande do Sul, creating a typically winter scenario in the far south of the country.
The rain and wind that arrive from the South
Despite the predominance of cold, the weather is not completely dry. Starting Thursday night, rain begins to return through the far west of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. This new area of instability changes the outlook in the South Region and adds a new element to the forecast.
The advance intensifies the following day. On Friday, the instability is expected to spread to more areas of the South, with a risk of moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts that may become more intense at times. Even with the rain, the cold does not disappear, and the afternoons remain mild, especially in the mountainous areas, where the highs stay lower throughout the day.
How the weather is in the Southeast
The Southeast Region also feels the effects of the cold air, especially at the beginning of the day. Thursday was marked by cold in São Paulo, the south of Minas Gerais, and the Serra da Mantiqueira, with conditions for frost in the highest points and possible in colder areas of the interior of São Paulo and even Greater São Paulo.
Throughout the day, however, the trend changes a bit. The weather becomes more stable in most of the region, after the weakening of the instabilities, with rain restricted to points on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and areas of the east and northeast of Minas Gerais. In the capitals, São Paulo is expected to have a high around 19°C, Rio de Janeiro near 23°C, and Belo Horizonte also close to 23°C, with clear weather.
The scenario in the rest of the country
While the Center-South faces intense cold, other regions experience very different realities. In the Midwest, the cold air mainly influences Mato Grosso do Sul and the south of Goiás, but most of the area has clear weather. Campo Grande is expected to have a high near 25°C, while Cuiabá returns to record more intense heat, with a forecast high of 34°C.
In the North and part of the Northeast, heat and humidity remain in control. The North should have rain showers in Amazonas, Roraima, Amapá, part of Pará, Acre, and Rondônia, mainly between the afternoon and evening. In the Northeast, the weather is divided between the dry and hot interior and the coastal strip, which still receives moisture from the ocean and favors rain in states like Bahia, Pernambuco, and Ceará.
