Ipem-SP Launches System to Identify Fuel Pumps with Anti-Fraud Technology at Gas Stations in the State. Tool Allows Consumers to Check Inspected and Certified Stations Against Fuel Fraud.
The São Paulo State Institute of Weights and Measures (Ipem-SP) has launched a new online system that allows consumers to locate fuel pumps with anti-fraud certification. The measure aims to increase safety in refueling transactions and reduce cases of fuel fraud, where the delivered volume does not correspond to the amount paid.
The tool is available on the official Ipem-SP website and already contains updated data on stations that have at least one pump equipped with the so-called anti-fraud technology. Any citizen can make the inquiry, and the data is regularly updated by the institute.
Protection Against Fuel Fraud
Pumps with anti-fraud technology comply with the Technical Metrological Regulation No. 227/2022 from Inmetro and are designed to prevent unauthorized changes in the volume of fuel supplied. According to Ipem-SP, the devices guarantee more precision in refueling and transparency in consumer relations.

Currently, the system’s dashboard indicates the presence of 341 electronic anti-fraud pumps installed at 137 gas stations in the state of São Paulo. However, not all municipalities have certified pumps, and some have not yet been validated by the institute.
Public Inquiry and Easy Access
The new system has been developed to be easily accessible and user-friendly. On the Ipem-SP portal, consumers can filter results by municipality and see which stations have at least one pump with anti-fraud certification. The database will be constantly updated as new inspections are carried out and new equipment is approved.
According to Ipem-SP, the goal is to increase transparency in the fuel sector, giving the public the option to choose establishments that have already undergone inspections and comply with established technical standards.
Reliability and Safety in Refueling
According to the institute, certified equipment is more difficult to tamper with and significantly reduces the risk of consumers receiving less fuel than indicated on the pump. The irregular practice, known as fuel fraud, is a common target of complaints and inspections throughout the country.
“These pumps are equipped with technology that inhibits metrological fraud, ensuring more precision in refueling and transparency for the consumer. Additionally, they adhere to rigorous quality standards, providing more safety and trust,” stated Ipem-SP in an official note.
Continuous Inspection and Technological Advancement
Ipem-SP acts as a delegated agency of Inmetro in the state of São Paulo and is responsible for conducting metrological verification of measuring instruments used in commerce, including fuel measuring pumps. The adoption of anti-fraud technology is a response to the ongoing cases of adulteration and manipulation of equipment at gas stations.
The inspection of the pumps is carried out periodically and follows strict technical criteria. The new system enhances this control by providing transparency to consumers, giving them direct access to inspection information.
How to Use the System
To access the dashboard, the user must visit the Ipem-SP portal (www.ipem.sp.gov.br) and search for the section on pumps with anti-fraud technology. The interface presents a list of stations by city, including address and the number of certified pumps at each location.
The inquiry is free of charge and does not require registration. According to the institute, the system is updated as new pumps pass inspection and receive the conformity seal.
Gradual Expansion Across the State
The number of pumps with anti-fraud technology is still small compared to the total number of equipment in operation in the state of São Paulo. However, Ipem-SP states that the trend is for gradual growth in adoption, both due to regulatory requirements and consumer pressure for more safety and transparency.
The inspection is part of a joint effort between state and federal agencies to combat unfair practices in the sector and ensure that consumers get exactly what they pay for at the time of refueling.
