More Than 39 Thousand Owners Will Be Entitled to Proportional Refund of IPVA 2024. See Who Can Withdraw, When and How to Check the Amount
The São Paulo Department of Finance and Planning has started to refund amounts related to the IPVA 2024 for drivers who had their vehicles stolen or robbed in 2023. The measure aims to reimburse up to R$ 24 million to taxpayers, with the first payments starting on April 7.
How Does the IPVA Refund Work?
The refund of the IPVA is made proportionally to the months in which the owner was without the vehicle. The calculation takes into account the month of the police report (B.O), whether the tax was paid in full or in installments, and whether the car was recovered.

Who Can Withdraw the IPVA Refund?

To be entitled to the refund, it is essential that the owner has registered a police report. Non-violent cases can be reported online, but theft with serious threats requires an in-person visit to a police station.

- Theft in January after full payment with discount: the owner will be entitled to almost 100% of the amount paid, unless the car is recovered — in that case, the proportional amount for the months with the car back will be deducted.
- Theft in March, after two installments paid: if the owner paid for January and February, they only owe 2/12 of the tax, and the excess amount will be refunded.
- Theft in August, with full payment in January: in this case, the owner is entitled to receive 5/12 of the total amount paid for the IPVA, provided that the vehicle has not been recovered by December 2024.
How to Check the Amount to Be Received?
To know if your refund is released, visit the Sefaz-SP website, click on the “IPVA” tab, go to “Services” and select “Consultation of refund for stolen or robbed vehicles in this State.” Fill in with the Renavam number and the corresponding B.O.
