With R$ 20 Million in Investment, Terminal in São Félix do Tocantins Promises to Accelerate Regional Development and Attract More Visitors to National Ecotourism
The government of Tocantins has begun construction on a new Brazilian airport in São Félix, in the Jalapão region. The project has a budget of R$ 20 million and is scheduled for completion in December of this year. The project was revealed in a report by Correio Braziliense and promises to transform access to the region, strengthen tourism, and have a direct impact on the local economy.
Coordinated by the Secretary of Tourism in partnership with Caixa Econômica Federal, the initiative aims to integrate air infrastructure, environmental preservation, and community development. The new structure already has a runway and hangar completed, which enables the operation of regular commercial flights, shortening the travel time to the heart of Jalapão.
What Is the Importance of the New Airport?
The construction of the terminal in São Félix is seen as a turning point for tourism in Tocantins. Between 2022 and 2023, about 60,000 people visited the region. With the new airport, this number is expected to grow exponentially, thanks to the improvement in logistics and increased national connectivity.

For Governor Wanderlei Barbosa, the project corrects a historical gap in local infrastructure. “This delivery has the potential to generate thousands of jobs and places Jalapão at the level it deserves in national and international tourism,” he stated.
What Changes for Ecotourism and Local Communities?
Jalapão is considered one of the most promising destinations for Brazilian ecotourism, with landscapes of dunes, fervedouros, and plateaus. The new infrastructure reduces the region’s isolation and stimulates the formalization of services such as lodging, food, transportation, and tour guides.
According to the state Secretary of Tourism, Hercy Filho, air access will “provide more investments and generate direct benefits for the communities of Jalapão.” The government’s proposal is to associate economic growth with cultural appreciation and environmental conservation.
What Economic Impacts Are Expected?
The arrival of the new airport should multiply the circulation of income in the surrounding municipalities, activating productive chains linked to the service sector. The state government is also betting on promoting community entrepreneurship, focusing on locally based tourism and income generation in areas historically distant from major urban centers.
The integration of air transport and sustainable tourism positions Jalapão as a national reference in strategic planning for regional development. The measure may also inspire other states to invest in logistics to leverage their natural potentials.
