Crossing of the JS Ikazuchi through the Taiwan Strait lasted about 14 hours, was monitored by China, and reignited diplomatic tensions with Japan amid rising regional tensions
A Japanese destroyer crossed the Taiwan Strait this Friday (17), between 4:02 AM and 5:50 PM local time, in a passage of about 14 hours that was monitored by China and heightened tensions between the two countries.
Monitored passage
The naval and air forces of the People’s Liberation Army tracked the route of the JS Ikazuchi throughout the journey, according to a statement from the Chinese military spokesperson. The Japan Self-Defense Forces did not comment on the crossing.
Beijing’s protest
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted with a formal protest to Japan. In a regular press conference, spokesperson Guo Jiakun classified the action as a threat to Chinese sovereignty and security, stating that Beijing firmly opposes the movement.

Criticism of the Japanese government
The spokesperson further stated that Japan would be repeating its mistakes. This remark referred to previous statements by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about Taiwan, which reportedly caused serious damage to bilateral relations.
For Guo, this exposes the dangerous attempt by certain individuals in Japan to militarily interfere in the Taiwan Strait and undermine peace and stability in the region.
Accumulated tension
The passage of the Japanese military ship occurred months after provocations attributed to the Japanese Prime Minister, which heightened tensions in Taiwan and around the strait.
Last week, the leader of the Kuomintang, Cheng Li-wun, emphasized the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait and the unity of the Chinese people.
The route in the Taiwan Strait
The crossing began at 4:02 AM and ended at 5:50 PM local time, totaling about 14 hours. The route once again placed Taiwan at the center of statements and official reactions in the region.
Without publicly commenting, Japan remained silent about the JS Ikazuchi, while China reinforced diplomatic criticism and military monitoring throughout the passage through the strait.
