Inaugural Achievement: Jirau Reinforces Environmental Commitment and Stands Out in the Hydropower Sector.
The Jirau Hydroelectric Plant, establishing itself as the fourth largest energy powerhouse in Brazil, celebrates international recognition by obtaining the highest certificate of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard. This achievement, granted by the prestigious Hydropower Sustainability Council, makes Jirau the first in Brazilian territory and second globally to receive such merit.
Maurício Bähr, a central figure at ENGIE Brazil and chair of the Board of Directors of Jirau Energia, expresses his gratitude: “It’s a milestone to achieve this certification in Brazil. From the initial concept, we aimed for sustainability. We overcame challenges, and this award, in our tenth year of operation, celebrates our dedication.”
Since Its Inception: Focus on Sustainability
Jirau is not just another hydropower plant. Its commitment to sustainable practices has been evident since its conception. In 2012, the plant was assessed through the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, an extension of the same council that recently certified it. In addition to technical innovation, environmental concern has been constant. Strategically located 120 km from Porto Velho (RO), it transforms the strength of the Madeira River into clean energy, ranking at the top in operational availability, according to ONS assessment.

Beyond environmental concerns, the hydropower plant also has a social commitment. Edson Silva, CEO of Jirau Energia, emphasizes: “Our vision goes beyond the ecological. We have programs aimed at local development, including groups such as fishermen. Jirau proves that it is possible to grow responsibly in the Amazon.”
A Legacy in Favor of ESG
After the certification, a 60-day public review period was established, allowing the public to assess the results. Notably, Jirau exceeded expectations, achieving over 60% in all advanced Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) topics.
Joerg Hartmann, who led the current assessment as well as the one in 2012, comments: “The evolution and consolidation of ecological and social practices are impressive. Knowing the dedicated team at Jirau Energia, we are optimistic about the ongoing commitment, focusing on community and aquatic biodiversity.”
Ongoing Contributions to the ESG Agenda
Since its conception, Jirau has shown a deep concern for the environment. Ongoing studies on local fauna and reforestation efforts have been priorities. Currently, 630 hectares are in the reforestation process, also benefiting small local farmers.
“Jirau is economically, ecologically, and socially integrated into its region”, points out Edson. The development of Nova Mutum Paraná is proof of this, providing better living conditions for those displaced by the construction of the plant.
In addition to local development, Jirau also has a global contribution. Certified by the UN, it is a leader in clean energy projects, avoiding the emission of six million tons of CO2 annually. This dedication has also been recognized through the issuance of Green Bonds and financing aligned with the Equator Principles.
