Unprecedented achievement: Jirau reinforces environmental commitment and stands out in the hydroelectric sector.
The Jirau Hydroelectric Plant, consolidating itself as the fourth largest energy power in Brazil, celebrates international recognition by guaranteeing the maximum certificate of the Hydroelectric Sustainability Standard. This achievement, granted by the prestigious Hydroelectric Sustainability Council, places Jirau as the pioneer in Brazilian territory and second globally to receive such merit.
Maurício Bähr, central figure of ENGIE Brasil and leader on the Board of Directors of Jirau Energia, expresses his gratitude: “It is a milestone to achieve this certification in Brazil. From the initial concept, we aimed for sustainability. We have overcome challenges, and this award, in our tenth year of operation, celebrates our dedication.”
From the beginning: focus on sustainability
Jirau is not just another hydroelectric plant. Its commitment to sustainable practices has been evident since its inception. In 2012, the plant was evaluated through the Hydroelectric Sustainability Assessment Protocol, an extension of the same council that recently certified it. In addition to technical innovation, environmental concern was constant. Strategically positioned 120 km from Porto Velho (RO), it transforms the power of the Madeira River into clean energy, ranking at the top in operational availability, according to an ONS assessment.
In addition to environmental issues, the hydroelectric plant also has a social commitment. Edson Silva, CEO of Jirau Energia, highlights: “Our vision goes beyond the ecological. We have programs aimed at local development, including groups such as fishermen. Jirau proves that it is viable to grow responsibly in the Amazon.”
A legacy in favor of ESG
Following certification, a 60-day public review period was introduced, allowing the public to evaluate the results. Notably, Jirau exceeded expectations, achieving over 60% across all advanced Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) topics.
Joerg Hartmann, who led the current and 2012 assessment, comments: “The evolution and consolidation of ecological and social practices is impressive. Knowing the dedicated team at Jirau Energia, we are optimistic about the continued commitment, focusing on the community and aquatic biodiversity.”
Ongoing contributions to the ESG Agenda
Since its conception, Jirau has demonstrated a deep concern for the environment. Constant studies on local fauna and reforestation efforts have been priorities. Currently, 630 hectares are in the reforestation process, benefiting small local farmers.
“Jirau is economically, ecologically and socially integrated into its region”, points out Edson. The development of Nova Mutum Paraná is proof of this, offering better living conditions to the population displaced by the construction of the plant.
In addition to local development, Jirau also has a global contribution. Certified by the UN, it is a leader in clean energy projects, avoiding the emission of six million tons of CO2 annually. This dedication was also recognized through the issuance of Green Bonds and financing aligned with the Equator Principles.
