Volvo FL Electric Expands Electric Portfolio With 14-Ton Electric Urban Truck, 180 kW Engine, Multiple Battery Configurations, and Focus on Maneuverability, Door-to-Door Deliveries, and Operations in Densely Populated Areas

Volvo Trucks introduced the new version of the Volvo FL Electric, an electric truck weighing approximately 14,000 kg with a 180 kW engine, developed for urban transport, expanding the electrification strategy focused on delivery operations, operational efficiency, and adaptation to densely populated areas.

The Volvo FL Electric emerged at the beginning of Volvo Trucks’ electrification strategy and quickly established itself as one of the brand’s first commercially available medium-duty trucks with a fully electric propulsion system.

Its compact size was designed for circulation in narrow streets, frequent stops, and executing door-to-door deliveries, characteristics that favor urban operations with high turnover and demand for maneuverability.

The electric propulsion system provides significantly lower noise levels and eliminates exhaust emissions, enhancing the truck’s viability in densely populated areas and low-emission zones.

As Volvo expands its range of electric trucks for new segments, the FL Electric is now integrated into the lineup as an entry-level option aimed at operators seeking more affordable electric solutions.

This new variant has a gross payload capacity of approximately 31,000 pounds, equivalent to around 14 tons, with a reduced payload limit and a revised battery configuration for urban use.

Project Oriented to the Needs of Urban Transport

According to Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management at Volvo Trucks, the Volvo FL Electric was conceived as a practical utility vehicle, with zero exhaust emissions and a direct focus on the real demands of urban transport.

According to Hjelmgren, Volvo works closely with customers to identify the most suitable configuration, prioritizing the selection of strictly necessary battery capacity for each operation.

This approach, according to the Volvo Trucks executive, helps maximize payload, operational efficiency, and overall profitability, avoiding excess weight and unnecessary costs associated with oversized batteries.

The latest version of the Volvo FL Electric is offered with multiple wheelbases, different axle configurations, and various battery options, allowing for precise customization according to urban operation.

This flexibility enables operators to adjust the truck for different delivery profiles, from light distribution to more demanding urban applications, while maintaining compatibility with space and circulation restrictions.

Integration of Batteries and Gain in Maneuverability

The batteries of the Volvo FL Electric have been positioned so as not to interfere with the installation of the body over the chassis, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of body types and equipment.

This solution facilitates the adaptation of the truck for different urban transport tasks, reducing design concessions and increasing operational versatility for logistics operators and fleet owners.

The new version also offers greater maneuverability in urban environments, with a minimum width of approximately 2.4 meters, favoring circulation in congested roads and tight loading and unloading areas.

This feature contributes to smoother daily operations in dense urban centers, where limited space and heavy traffic directly impact productivity and delivery times.

New Battery System and Expansion to Other Models

As part of a broader update to the electric portfolio, Volvo is implementing the new battery system in various models of electric trucks from the brand.

The system is available in the new FL Electric with an estimated gross weight of around 31,000 pounds, in addition to the 35,000 and 40,000-pound versions of the same model.

The same batteries also equip the Volvo FE Electric models, which support combined gross weights of up to approximately 57,000 pounds, extending the reach of the technology for heavier urban and regional applications.

Since the initial launch in 2019, the electric versions of the FL and FE trucks have been continuously expanding their global presence, with availability in markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Throughout this period, Volvo Trucks has increased both production and the electric vehicle portfolio, currently achieving eight models of battery electric trucks in serial production.

To date, more than 5,000 electric trucks from Volvo have been sold globally, consolidating the brand’s electrification strategy and expanding the adoption of this type of vehicle in urban and regional transport, even with minor technical adjustments still evolving.
