Construction Giant Skanska Is at the Forefront of Sustainable Innovation by Operating the Volvo EC230, the Largest Electric Excavator of Its Kind, in a Large-Scale Transit Project in Los Angeles
Volvo launched the EC230 excavator in Europe and China, but has not yet officially launched it in the United States, with availability in North America expected in 2024. Skanska, however, is already making history with this machine, which stands out for its size and the revolution it represents in the construction industry, according to Electrek.
Skanska’s initiative, which involves using Volvo’s largest electric excavator in a 90-day project, is part of four pilot programs in the United States. This crucial test aims to evaluate the performance of the electric excavator in a “megaproject”, the Purple Line Extension Transit Project (Line D) of the Los Angeles Metro.
James Bailey, Executive Vice President of West Coast Operations for Skanska USA Civil, highlights the importance of this initiative: “The construction industry accounts for 40% of energy-related carbon emissions… Participating in this Volvo pilot allows us to continue to be part of the transition to a low-carbon economy, zero-emission construction. Doing this on a large-scale project like the Purple Line Extension Transit Project (Line D) will provide unique insights to inform sustainable innovation in the future.”

Replacing Diesel With Electricity
The Volvo EC230 replaced a diesel-powered Komatsu PC228 excavator on the Los Angeles project, marking a significant shift towards more eco-friendly construction equipment. Its main task is to load trucks with export material from a stockpile at the La Brea Station of Line D, which is currently under construction.
The Volvo EC230 is a state-of-the-art electric excavator with an operating weight ranging from 23,000 to 26,100 kg (50,706 to 57,540 lbs). Its heart is a robust 264 kWh battery, providing an impressive runtime of up to five hours of continuous operation.
This pilot project represents a crucial step towards sustainability in the construction industry, demonstrating that electric technology can successfully be applied in large excavators, significantly reducing the carbon emissions associated with this sector.
Through this innovative partnership, Skanska and Volvo are proving that it is possible to achieve a balance between the demands of modern construction and environmental preservation, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future in the construction industry in Los Angeles and beyond.
