The world's largest battery manufacturer is entering the automotive market, and its first chassis already promises to revolutionize with impressive technological advances.

The world's largest battery manufacturer, the Chinese CATL, surprised once again by expanding its operations in the automotive sector. During an event in Xangai, the renowned company presented the Bedrock Chassis, described as “the world's first ultra-safe mono-skid chassis".

According to the company, this launch promises to redefine the future of electric vehicles, combining cutting-edge technology, unparalleled safety and a modular design that could revolutionize automobile manufacturing.

It was presented in Shanghai.

What is Bedrock Chassis?

Inspired by the chassis concept presented by General Motors In 2002, the Bedrock Chassis adopted a modular and flat structure.

This configuration, too call skateboard, integrates the batteries directly into the chassis and uses electric motors on the axles.

The design resembles a long, flat scooter, maximizing the vehicles' interior space and dynamic performance.

This type of chassis offers significant advantages:

  • Cost reduction: Allows the manufacture of different models from a single base.
  • space optimization: Ensures greater usable area inside the vehicle.
  • Future updates: Facilitates replacements and upgrades to the battery system.

Additionally, the frame protects the batteries from impacts, providing additional safety. The Bedrock Chassis takes these benefits to the next level by reducing the development time for new models from 36 months to just 12 to 18 months.

Security: A highlight

O Bedrock Chassis incorporates a technology called cell-to-chassis, which integrates the battery cells directly into the chassis structure.

This approach increases vehicle rigidity and raises safety standards. CATL claims the chassis can absorb up to 85 percent of crash energy, up from the traditional 60 percent.

To demonstrate its effectiveness, the company demonstrated a frontal impact test at 120 km/h, where the prototype resisted without fires, explosions or thermal leaks.

The structure, inspired by the caparazón of a turtle, uses materials such as submarine-grade steel and aerospace aluminum alloys, ensuring maximum protection for occupants.

Another innovative point is the high-voltage disconnect system, which disables the circuits in just 0,01 seconds after an impact.

Residual energy is eliminated in 0,2 seconds, setting a new standard in the automotive industry.

A step beyond batteries

Although it already dominates the global battery market with a 37% share, CATL wants more.

The Bedrock Chassis is designed to support Level 3 and 4 autonomous driving technologies, a clear sign that the company is focused on intelligent and adaptive solutions.

The first automaker to adopt this platform will be Avatr Technology, a subsidiary of Changan Automobile. While there is no official launch date for the first model with the Bedrock Chassis yet, the partnership represents a milestone in CATL’s strategy to expand beyond batteries.

The Impact on the Market

CATL’s entry into vehicle design and manufacturing reinforces its role as a leader in technological innovation. The company also recently introduced the Choco-SEB battery system, capable of recovering 100% of autonomy in just 1 minute.

This combination of advancements illustrates CATL’s ambition to transform the global automotive market.

While other automakers and suppliers struggle to keep up with the industry’s rapid evolution, CATL is moving forward with solutions that promise to shape the future of electric vehicles.

The Bedrock Chassis is just the beginning of this new phase, which could set the standards for safety, efficiency and modular design for future generations of automobiles.
