Brazilian Navy Continues Its Partnership With Itaguai Construções Navais (ICN) For Submarine Maintenance. Understand How The Contract Between The Navy And ICN Will Work.
Itaguai Construções Navais (ICN) signed a contract with the Brazilian Navy on February 5 for the maintenance of Riachuelo-class submarines, strengthening its strategic role in Brazilian defense. The new agreement promises detailed inspections of the Humaitá and Riachuelo vessels, essential to ensure the continuous and safe operation of the Brazilian submarine fleet.
Contract Foresees Maintenance Services For Fundamental Submarines In 2025
These submarines of the Brazilian Navy, built by ICN itself, are essential for the country’s naval defense. The contract signing event was held in Rio de Janeiro, at the Navy’s Industrial Directorate, and was attended by authorities such as Mário Botelho, Industrial Director of ICN, and Rear Admiral Cantarin.
The contract between ICN and the Brazilian Navy provides for maintenance services for important submarines in 2025. ICN teams will take care of IMA phases 3 to 5 of the Humaitá Submarine, as well as SRA1 of the Riachuelo Submarine. This work includes preventive maintenance and corrections on demand, ensuring that the submarines continue operating at full efficiency and safety.

Get To Know The Submarines Involved In The Contract Between ICN And The Navy
The Riachuelo submarine, incorporated in September 2022, is 72 meters long, with a diameter of six meters. Its displacement is 1,870 tons, with diesel-electric propulsion and it can be armed with torpedoes, missiles, and mines.
Its crew consists of up to 41 personnel, and it has an operational range of over 70 days, with a cooperation quota beyond 250 meters. This was the first to be delivered under the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB).
The Humaitá, launched in 2024 and under construction since 2008, is the second of four diesel-electric submarines planned in PROSUB. It measures 71.6 meters in length, 6.2 meters in diameter, and can accommodate a crew of up to 35 people, including eight officers and 27 ratings. Until the arrival of the “Riachuelo,” the first vessel launched in PROSUB, the country only had Tupo-class submarines to operate under the waters.
Partnership Between ICN And The Brazilian Navy Continues To Strengthen
The partnership between ICN and the Brazilian Navy has been strengthening over the years. In addition to submarine maintenance, the company has played an essential role in the construction of Riachuelo-Class submarines within the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB).
Now, with expanding its role to submarine maintenance, ICN reaffirms its position as a fundamental partner in national defense.
The Brazilian naval industry faces challenges, such as the demand for continuous investment in technology and skilled labor. However, contracts like this demonstrate the growing capacity of the sector to meet the needs of the Navy and expand its presence on the international scene.
The future of the partnership between the Brazilian Navy and ICN is promising, with possibilities for new collaborations in the creation of advanced naval technologies. The continuous maintenance of Riachuelo-Class submarines not only reinforces Brazil’s security but also boosts the Defense Industrial Base, generating jobs and innovation in the sector.
