Earlier this month, Meta filed a motion with California Attorney General Rob Bonta asking him to intervene in OpenAI’s move to change its status from a nonprofit to a for-profit company.

The company argues that this model can attract investors to start nonprofit organizations, raise hundreds of millions of dollars in tax-exempt donations to fund research and development, and then convert into profitable companies once their technologies reach commercial viability.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously said the move would be essential to attracting more investor capital, but it has raised questions about the organization's transparency and original commitment to promoting safe and accessible artificial intelligence.
Elon Musk's position
Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, decided to leave the organization in 2018. Since then, he has accused the organization of having deviated from its initial mission.
