Understand How The Economic Plan, The Electoral Calendar, And US Support Can Shape The Political Future Of Argentina
Javier Milei faces, on Sunday, October 26, 2025, his biggest test at the polls since taking office as president of Argentina.
The legislative elections will renew the Argentine Congress and could determine the direction of the remainder of his term, which runs until 2027.
If the Liberty Advances party performs poorly, Milei could lose political strength and consequently see decrees and reforms overturned in parliament.
Proximity to Trump and The New Economic Plan
To increase popular support, Milei has bet heavily on the political alliance with Donald Trump, President of the United States, and thus sought to bolster his international image.
This rapprochement was intensified in early October 2025, when both held strategic meetings and aligned public speeches.
During this period, the Argentine launched his plan “Argentina Great Again”, clearly inspired by Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again”.
For this reason, the strategy reinforces the link between Milei’s rhetoric and the liberal economic vision advocated by the American.
In this way, the movement strengthened not only his internal base but also external prestige.
Central Axes of The Plan
The announced plan focuses on two structural reforms — labor and tax — that, according to Milei, are essential for modernizing the country.
Among the main measures are allowing salaries to be paid 100% in dollars and ending automatic renewals of collective labor agreements.
Additionally, the government aims to reduce labor litigation, simplify taxes, and consequently stimulate the creation of formal jobs.
Similarly, the administration promises to eliminate around 20 taxes and expand tax deductions, in order to attract investment and increase national productivity.
According to Milei, “the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles and interest rates will create an unprecedented productive revolution.”

Public Security And Social Reforms
Alongside economic proposals, the Liberty Advances party advocates for deep changes in public security laws to reduce crime.
Among these measures are lowering the age of criminal responsibility, harshening penalties for serious crimes, and regulating firearms.
Therefore, the plan seeks to demonstrate firmness while balancing economic liberalism and stricter social control.
Additionally, Milei attempts to signal to the conservative electorate that, under his government, there will be order, stability, and authority.
US Support
The American support became even more crucial after the currency crisis in September 2025, which shook investor confidence.
In this context, the US government signed a $20 billion financial agreement with Argentina and soon after began negotiations for a second funding round of the same amount.
During Milei’s visit to the White House on October 14, Donald Trump publicly reaffirmed his political and economic support.
According to him, “the agreements depend on Milei’s victory, for if he loses, we will not be generous.”
Furthermore, Trump emphasized: “I want to see Argentina succeed and believe that, with Milei, the country is heading in the right direction.”
Consequently, the statement reinforced the Argentine’s image as a preferred ally of the United States in South America.
Challenges in Congress And Political Landscape
Currently, Milei’s party holds only 36 of the 257 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, which forces him to constantly negotiate with other parties to pass agendas.
Thus, in the elections on October 26, the president needs to secure at least one-third of the seats to ensure governability and prevent legislative blockages.
In recent months, presidential decrees have been suspended by lawmakers, demonstrating resistance to the proposed economic policies.
In this way, political analysts consider that the vote will be decisive for the future of structural reforms and for the stability of the government until 2027.
