The Licensing Request Made By The Mining Company ArcelorMittal Is Under Review By The Secretariat Of The Environment Of Itabira, Minas Gerais

Active for 2 decades, the waste pile of the Andrade Mine, located between Bela Vista de Minas, Itabira, and João Monlevade (Minas Gerais), may have its potential expanded this year. To this end, the mining company ArcelorMittal submitted a request for agreement to the Piracicaba Municipal Environmental Protection Area (Apam Piracicaba), which must be studied by the Itabira Municipal Environment Council (Codema) in April.

According to Denes Lott, Secretary of the Environment, social and environmental conditions are being studied before the project execution is approved. One of them is the installation of 200 septic tanks in a community near the Minas Gerais mine. However, just like the approval for the increase of the waste pile, other actions still depend on technical analysis by the Secretariat of the Environment and authorization from Codema. The information was confirmed by the Itabira City Hall to the website DeFato, where Gustavo Linhares produced the original report.

“We inform you that the company’s process refers to a project to expand the waste pile already installed at the Andrade Mine, which is located at the boundary of Bela Vista de Minas, João Monlevade, and Itabira. This request is under evaluation by the Environmental technicians who will provide a thorough opinion on the studies presented. It will cover all necessary conditions,” clarified the city hall of Minas Gerais. “One of them, already in negotiation with the company, will be the rural sanitation of the surrounding communities. […] The expected evaluation by the councilors is scheduled for the April meeting. Before this process, it is not possible to anticipate information, as the technical and legal analyses are not yet completed,” they concluded.

Statement from the Mining Company ArcelorMittal

According to DeFato, the Minas Gerais mining company ArcelorMittal stated that the waste pile at the site has been operating in Itabira since the 2000s, thus it is already licensed. Therefore, it only awaits the opinion of the responsible authorities regarding the necessary compensations to continue operations.

The complete and official statement from ArcelorMittal contains the following: “The approval requested by ArcelorMittal Andrade Mine from the Conservation Unit (APAM Piracicaba) refers to the process of expanding an operating waste pile, located in the municipality of Itabira for over 20 years. Additionally, we clarify that the Andrade Mine has been operating in the region for 86 years and has the necessary authorizations from the competent authorities.

To define the location of the pile, environmental studies were conducted at the time, as required by current legislation, which considered alternative locations. The authorization to begin operations for disposal in this structure was obtained by the company in 2002.

As it is an existing pile, it is licensed, and the process of its expansion, as well as the applicable compensations provided by environmental compensation legislation, is under review by the state environmental authority. The social and environmental impacts related to the operation are controlled and monitored, as per the approved Environmental Control Plan in the licensing process.”

About The Andrade Mine Located In Minas Gerais

Owned by the mining company ArcelorMittal, the Andrade Mine in Minas Gerais completed 86 years in July 2021. The unit directs all its production exclusively to supply the João Monlevade plant, which produces specific steel for the automotive industry. This plant in the state of Minas Gerais has an annual potential of 3.5 million tons of Sinter Feed.

Recently, the ArcelorMittal mining unit was expanded – the beginning of the Itabirito Project, authorized by the State Environmental Policy Council (Copam) – which extended the mine’s lifespan until 2062. R$ 115.7 million was the total invested in new equipment, such as screening systems, quaternary crushing, magnetic concentration, concentrate and tailings filtration.
