On last Thursday (08/19), the global mining company Vale announced the start of tests of its new fleet of electric trucks powered by electricity from renewable energy at the Água Limpa mines in Minas Gerais and Sorowako in Indonesia. The company is now focusing on adopting more sustainable practices in its operations and investing in the energy transition of the mining sector, not only at the national level.

Aiming for sustainability linked to the operations of global mining, the miner Vale announced the start of the testing phase with its new fleet of electric trucks in the mines of Brazil and Indonesia.
The company is now starting activities with a total of two 72-ton off-road battery-powered trucks, thus seeking increasingly efficient solutions in the ESG practices of the segment.

The electric trucks are the first to be used by a global miner such as Vale and replace diesel with electricity from a renewable energy source, making the refueling process 100% clean.
In addition, the new fleet of the miner also features technology that reduces noise, minimizing the impacts on the communities living near the operations. The two new vehicles were produced by XCMG Mining Machinery, a subsidiary of the largest machinery manufacturer in China, and mark a new phase for the company in the search for electrifying its operations in the mines.
During 2019, the miner Vale had already made a series of promises about the future of its operations in global mining and stated that it would zero its net carbon emissions scopes 1 and 2 by 2050.
To achieve this goal, the miner plans to invest up to US$ 6 billion in the coming decades, and the use of a fleet of electric trucks in its mines is another step taken towards its sustainability objective for the previously set period.
Miner Invests in Changes in the Technology of Its Electric Trucks to Provide Even More Efficiency and Quality in Their Use in the Mines
The mining market is increasingly in need of cutting-edge technologies that can provide around 400 kWh to load and propel a truck during the transport cycle, which involves loading, displacement, dumping, returning, and queuing.
Thus, Vale is investing in the search for new solutions that allow for this efficiency, and its new electric trucks are reaching the standard the company aims to achieve.
The vehicles have a storage capacity of 525 Kwh, capable of operating up to 36 cycles, just over a day of operation, without the need to stop for recharging. Additionally, the electrification technology also allows for energy regeneration during descent maneuvers, making refueling even more effective, as well as optimizing loading transport processes.
“We see this partnership with XCMG as another important step in our long-term relationship with China, and in the direction of more sustainable mining,” commented Alexandre Pereira, executive vice president of Global Business Solutions at Vale, about the agreement with the company for the production of electric vehicles that are in the testing phase in the mines.
