The engine unit destroyed by the storm will enter a new phase, with gradual reconstruction, provisional operation, and changes in the production of the Corolla and Yaris Cross

A significant change in Toyota’s industrial operation in Brazil was confirmed after the damage caused by the storm that hit Porto Feliz, in the interior of São Paulo, in September 2025. The factory of the automaker’s engines was completely demolished, as a large part of the structure was compromised and made it difficult to reuse the old building. The decision also considers the need for a new construction more resistant to climate disasters, maintaining only the floor of the original unit.

Total demolition opens a new phase for Toyota in Porto Feliz

The confirmation was made by Evandro Maggio, president of Toyota do Brasil, after participating in Anfavea Visions 2026, held in São Paulo on Tuesday, June 9. The executive informed that the demolition process was recently completed and that reconstruction will be done in stages, covering casting, machining, and assembly. According to him, the full resumption of operations should occur between the end of 2027 and the beginning of 2028, with casting expected as the first area to gradually return.

Provisional production maintains Yaris Cross engines

Currently, the assembly of Yaris Cross engines takes place in a rented warehouse in Porto Feliz, using parts and components imported from Indonesia and Japan. For this space, the equipment and machines recovered after the storm were brought in. The Corolla lines, in turn, receive ready-made engines from Toyota factories in other countries, while the automaker reorganizes its production structure in Brazil.

Changes in Sorocaba and maintenance of jobs

The production of the Corolla will be concentrated in Sorocaba starting in November, and the company has prepared a stock of the model to ensure sales until then. According to Maggio, the priority in the process was to retain the workers from Porto Feliz. Therefore, no employee from the unit was dismissed, and part of the team will be directed to Sorocaba’s factory 2, whose inauguration is scheduled for November.

Future of the Indaiatuba factory remains undefined

Toyota is also proceeding with the deactivation process of the Indaiatuba factory, in the interior of São Paulo. However, Evandro Maggio stated that the company will only evaluate the unit’s future after the entire deactivation is completed. The caution indicates that the automaker still intends to analyze the next steps before making a definitive decision about the plant.

Reconstruction reinforces Toyota’s industrial reorganization

The complete demolition of the Porto Feliz factory marks a decisive stage in the recovery of Toyota’s engine operation in Brazil. The phased reconstruction, temporary production in a rented warehouse, and the concentration of the Corolla in Sorocaba show how the automaker is trying to preserve industrial activity while preparing a safer structure for the coming years.
