Due To Heavy Rains In Minas, Governor Zema Requested The Ministry Of Mines And Energy To Suspend The Light Bill Banner

Romeu Zema, governor of Minas Gerais from the Novo Party, stated on January 27, Thursday, that the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) denied the suspension of the water scarcity banner on the state’s light bill.

Romeu Zema sent the request regarding the light bill to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, managed by Admiral Bento Albuquerque, about two weeks ago. Governor Zema asked in the request for “solidarity for the people of Minas” due to the rains that hit the state at the beginning of January, further worsening the economic situation affected by the pandemic.

On Thursday, Zema announced on his Twitter profile the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s decision not to suspend the light bill banner and emphasized the reason for the request: “The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, denied the suspension of the water scarcity banner on the light bill. My request for relief for the people of Minas was motivated not only by the effects of the pandemic but also by the severe recent impacts of the rains in our state,” Zema wrote.

At the end of August last year, the Chamber of Hydro-Energy Management (CREG) established and the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) implemented the “water scarcity banner,” which requires covering “exceptional” expenses for activating thermoelectric plants and importing energy. During this period, the country was facing a critical water crisis.

Fee Charged on The Light Bill

For every 100 kilowatt-hours used, an amount equivalent to R$ 14.20 is charged on the light bill, and it is expected to be paid by April of this year, following the start of implementation in September 2021.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy was approached for feedback regarding Governor Zema’s publication about the light bill. However, as of the time the original piece, made by Franco Malheiro, was published, there had been no response. To check the article from the O Tempo portal, click this link. When the Ministry of Mines and Energy issues a statement, the response to Romeu Zema and updates on the light bill will be posted on the website.
