The Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, announced that the Ministry and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) are analyzing with ‘impartiality and responsibility’ the new request from Petrobras to explore oil and gas in the Amazon River Delta.
The minister stated that, so far, more than 2,000 permits have been granted to the state-owned company. Marina also emphasized that all decisions are based on technical criteria, not ideological ones.
She highlighted that the Ibama does not have a political or ideological position and that the denial of permits is also based on technical criteria. The studies are being reexamined, and the official announcement will be made considering the necessary impartiality and responsibility for the case.

The final decision does not solely depend on Ibama, as the National Energy Policy Council also needs to provide its opinion. The minister expressed confidence in the position of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva regarding the case, highlighting his concern in respecting science and seizing the opportunities that Brazil has.
The licensing request for exploration in the Amazon River Delta was made by a private company five years ago, but it was denied by Ibama. In May of this year, Petrobras resubmitted the request, which was also rejected. Marina underscored the sensitivity of the location and the importance of taking all necessary precautions in oil exploration in that region.
Ibama will analyze the request impartially and will issue its verdict.
