Vale S.A Signed Memorandum with German Steelmaker to Focus on Renewable Steel Production. The Mining Company Expects to Reduce 15% of Emissions by 2035.
Vale S.A and the German steelmaker Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA signed a memorandum of understanding to find solutions focused on the production process of carbon-neutral steel.
Iron Ore Company Aims to Reduce 15% of Emissions by 2035
With the signed memorandum, Vale S.A and SHS plan to study and explore, among other initiatives, the use of Vale’s green iron ore briquette and direct reduction pellets in steelmaking, a briquette plant located near SHS facilities, and Tecnored technology.
According to the mining company, the initiative contributes to achieving its commitment to reduce 15% of Scope 3 net emissions by 2035.

Green Steel Production to Start in 2027
Vale S.A aims to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 33% by 2030 and achieve neutrality by 2050, aligning with the Paris Agreement, leading the way towards sustainable iron ore.
SHS is an active operational management holding company with two steel companies in Saarland, Saarstahl and Dillinger. With the memorandum, the companies are ready to shape the transition to green production. Green steel production is scheduled to begin in Saarland in 2027.
The new production route will include an electric arc furnace at the Volklingen plant and a direct reduction (DRI) plant for sponge iron production at the Dillinger plant, in addition to the established blast furnace route.
Restructuring of Metal Operations
Last month, Vale S.A declared that the company’s Board of Directors approved the reorganization of its base metal operations, such as copper and nickel, held by the mining company in the country.
The approval of the restructuring plans the transfer of copper assets to Salobo Metais and the transfer of nickel assets to a new company that will be established by the company in the country.
