Historical Monument Receives Investment of R$ 2.8 Million, Revitalized Heritage Founded in the Era of Dom Pedro II
After more than 50 years of abandonment, the Engenheiro Corrêa Railway Station, in Ouro Preto (MG), finally receives a restoration project. The initiative, which aims to preserve one of the most important railway landmarks in the country, has a investment of R$ 2.8 million and is expected to be completed in ten months, according to the Correio de Minas website.
With master sponsorship from the Herculano Group and support from the J. Mendes Group, through the Federal Law of Cultural Incentive (Lei Rouanet), the project is managed by Holofote and has the support of the Ouro Preto City Hall. The goal is to transform the station into a cultural and community space, reclaiming its historical significance.
First Steps of the Monument Restoration
The works took place in November 2024 with the cleaning of the area, which was vandalized and deteriorated. Following that, the fencing of the perimeter was conducted to ensure safety during the interventions.

To prevent structural damage during the rainy season, a temporary roof was installed, and bracing of the walls was performed, preventing the building from collapsing before the re-founding structure.

According to Gilson Antunes, responsible for managing the project, these measures were essential to preserve the station before the roof covering. Architect Bruno Ferreira emphasizes the need to brace all walls to prevent collapses during the excavation of the new foundation.
History and Importance of the Railway Station
The Engenheiro Corrêa Railway Station was inaugurated in 1896, as part of the Dom Pedro II Railway project, initiated in 1855. The railway aimed to connect Rio de Janeiro to Belém do Pará, passing through Minas Gerais, São Paulo and other provinces of the empire.
After the Proclamation of the Republic, the line was renamed Central Brazil Railway. The station, initially called Sardinha, was renamed Engenheiro Corrêa in honor of Manoel Francisco Corrêa Júnior, a railway employee who died in an accident at km 514.
Even inactive for decades, the station is still a symbol of railway advancement in Brazil, witnessing the evolution of transportation and the national economy.
Next Steps of the Monument Revitalization Project
According to Wanderson Gomes, Cultural Manager of the Ouro Preto City Hall, the restoration follows a detailed plan to recover the structure and adapt it to new functions. After stabilizing the walls and restructuring the foundation, a new roof will be constructed, continuing the revitalization process.
The investment in the project will be divided as follows:
R$ 2 million – Funded by Herculano Mineração
R$ 820 thousand – Sponsored by Ferro + Mineração
The project aims not only to preserve a historical heritage but also to provide a space for leisure, culture, and tourism for residents and visitors of Ouro Preto. Thus, the old railway station can gain a new life, keeping its relevance alive for future generations.
The restoration of the Engenheiro Corrêa Station is an important step in preserving the railway history of Brazil!
