The Smart Engine of Magna Will Be Launched Still in 2022 and the Brand Has Already Guaranteed That This Innovation Will Increase the Range of Electric Cars by 30%, Leaving Behind the Use of High-Power Batteries
The CES 2022, which took place last week, from January 5 to 8 in Las Vegas, showcased the launch announcement of Magna’s innovative smart engine “EtelligentReach,” capable of increasing the range of electric cars by 30%, leaving aside the ‘super batteries.’ The company developed the entire smart engine system in partnership with LG. According to Magna, this new technology will bring a major revolution in electric cars, due to an enabled software that serves to optimize vehicle driving dynamics and energy management.

First Tests of the Smart Engine EtelligentReach
The smart powertrain has two motors with integrated silicon carbide transmissions and inverters. The EtelligentReach was tested in a prototype similar to the Jaguar i-Pace model, for which Magna Steyr is responsible for production, on behalf of Jaguar Cars, at its factory in Graz, Austria.
The control unit executes all commands of the car’s dynamic part, featuring a disconnection function aimed at minimizing energy loss and friction. Indeed, this ensures greater autonomy and safety for the vehicle, which besides having two motors, does not require the use of high-power batteries.

Understand More About the Control Unit Created by Magna and LG for the Development of the Smart Engine
The control unit also offers a “longitudinal torque vectoring,” which is nothing more than a type of control directed at the traction and grip system on both the front and rear wheels, which is not only active during turns and curves, as is customary, allowing the car to gain a safety margin of approximately 10%.
Even though they haven’t mentioned the battery capacity yet, the vehicle currently has 150 km more compared to what the car without the smart engine can offer. In fact, the optimization of individual components from the control unit is a key element in making this technology possible.
Production of Electric Cars Equipped with the New Smart Engine Technology
It is estimated that the production vehicle that will bring the new smart engine technology in its grand debut, scheduled for later this year in 2022, will be the electric Fisker Ocean SUV, produced by the Magna Steyr factory, likely around the third quarter of 2022.
This information came from the announcement made at the CES 2022 event, where technical characteristics compatible with those initially illustrated for the graphical and explanatory representation of EtelligentReach were provided.
In addition to other brands, Apple has shown great interest in this technology, as it has long been seeking partners and suppliers for its Apple Car project, which in 2021 was allegedly considered for a partnership with LG-Magna in a possible future collaboration.
